DS is about to become a teenager. We usually increase pocket money on a birthday so wondering what you recommend?

It is going to depend what you pay now. I gave 50p per year so £6.50 at 13 per week. More than some less than others.

BarbarianMum · 09/03/2019 11:18

Also depends on what it's suppised to cover. Ds1 went from £2/week to £5/week at 13 but now if he wants to go to the cinema, or Taco Bell's, or swimming w friends, he has to fund it.

ashvivienne · 09/03/2019 12:25

£25 a week for DS since he was 13 but with that he funds his weekend so if he wants to go to the cinema or out with friends etc he uses his £25 and if he wants a game for the PS4 he needs to save his pocket money or ask for it as a gift for Xmas or birthday

Wow Ash can you be my mum lol.

10 years ago I was giving my teenagers their family allowance. They had to buy all their own clothes and fund their lives out of that. They also worked in our factory for extra money, sometimes they could get in total £200 a month. They were very rich in comparison to some of their friends but one of my DD friends had her own store card to use so it is all a matter of what you can afford or justify.

£30 a month for 15 yo here (which is about the same as lonecat), covers most things she wants to do, we pay for phone and clothes and give some extra for holidays etc. She can do jobs at home to earn more e.g. wash cars, ironing. Will up it after GCSEs to cover lunches at college, clothing allowance, transport etc.

Custardo · 09/03/2019 12:47

i can't get my head around just givving £30 a month ( not that we would have been able to afford to at the time)

Helenoftroy1 · 09/03/2019 15:08

I give my 13 year old £10 per week and he can earn extra for good behaviour so sometimes £20 a week

OxanaVorontsova · 09/03/2019 15:13

What would you give custardo?

BrokenWing · 09/03/2019 15:29

£100/month into his bank account

He needs to pay for school snack/lunches at around £2-£2.50 a day (around £45-£50/month), £12/month for his phone, and he chooses to pay £5.99 for Netflix some months, sometimes (just after a new Fifa comes out) £3.99/month for EA Sports subscription for a few months. The rest (around £30-£40) is his spending money or to save.

beachyhead · 09/03/2019 15:43

Hope my 13 year old doesn't read this!

£15 a month here, liable to be reduced to £10 for random 'not doing what you're told'...

But I cover phone, necessary clothes and some trip money....

TeenTimesTwo · 09/03/2019 15:57

DD2, 14, gets £15 / month. She isn't really independently socialising at the moment, so on rare occasions she does we give her a bit extra. When it becomes regular we will up to £25. It is all 'discretionary spending' and she pays for PAYG phone.

I don't think teens should get too used to loads of money to fritter, because when they are working or at university at 18 they won't have it then.

Mmmmdanone · 09/03/2019 16:20

My 14yo DD gets £15 a month from me and £10 from granny. I pay her mobile phone, contact lenses and clothes though.

killpop · 09/03/2019 22:10

My nearly 14 yo gets £5a week put on her bank card. She doesn't really go out at all, so has very few typical teenage expenses. I've been talking with her about increasing the weekly transfer.
