you read something SHOCKING in your 16 yr old daughters diary... .... yes, I know I shouldn't have been reading it.... but now don't know what to do for the best......

I need to have a 'conversation' with her about what I read but without giving it away that I read it......

what to do?

can you stick it in a conversation without dropping yourself in it,
Make sure you have got her on contraceptives! there are leaflets on everything in dr's surgeries.
sex drugs sti's etc they might help you.
If you cannot drop it without dropping you in it forget about it!
NAUGHTY YOU!

ThePrisoner · 05/07/2007 20:56

Just because it's written in her diary doesn't make it true (I remember my scribblings at the same age!!)

southeastastra · 05/07/2007 20:57

put it back, she'd be mortified

LucyJones · 05/07/2007 20:58

I don't think there is anything you can do to be honest
Any advice now will straight away reveal you read her diary
You could leave magazines around if it's a sex thing, or leaflets if it's a drugs thing, but that would probably give the game away

agree with onechild - find a way of broaching the subject without referring to her diary (perhaps linking it to a magazine article/something on the TV).
Trust is a 2-way thing and you'll blow it if she knows you've been reading her diary (and it might not be true anyway as ThePrisoner says). A friend of mine's mum read a letter to her years ago which showed that she was sleeping with her boyfriend. It really damaged their relationship, so tread carefully.

need more info.

there are two subjects here - without more info al mumsnetters will go on about is what a terrible person you are for reading her diary. - you will feel shit and may not come back

so whats the issue?

lilolilmanchester · 06/07/2007 18:37

can I just say I don't think you're a terrible person for reading the diary, would have been tempted to do the same myself. I was just saying you have to think through the trust thing if you tell her you've been reading the diary. But as Custardo says, if you feel you can share more, we might be able to help you more.
