Pocket Money for my Y9 daughter

How much should I give my daughter as pocket money? She goes to school in central London (SPGS); we're not rich at all, but she works very hard and sometimes likes to get a little lip-gloss or a latte for herself in Hammersmith. I don't want to be mean, but equally, I don't want to spoil her.

Does she do chores ? Any trouble at school ? These factors may affect how give her

Surely this has come up before now? What are you doing at the moment? There's loads of v wealthy girls so of course she'll be hanging out with people with plenty of cash. I'd say £20 a week.

TheFabulist · 20/01/2019 20:13

MotherDearest, she has been struggling with health problems and hasn't had much energy to do anything except study and practice her music. She works very hard. OurKidMolly, at the moment I give her 15 a week and was afraid that might be too much, but am reassured that you think 20 a week might be acceptable!

Considering she goes to a grammar school where I’m guessing some spoilt children may attend and she does work very hard I agree that 20 will Be fine or 15

MotherDearest, I am certain she will start to carry her own weight as soon as she gets better. Thank you both, very much.

Sorry read that as age nine , still thin £15/20 a lot , £10 normal for a 13/14 year old.

GreenTulips · 20/01/2019 20:20

Year 9

Ietthemeatcake · 20/01/2019 20:23

My DD is in year 11, and I give her £35 a month, in year 9 it would have been £25. She manages to save and buy bits of clothes from that as well as getting make up, sweets, the odd Costa. She does the odd babysitting job too, so with that she maybe has £55 a month.

TheyBuiltThePyramids · 20/01/2019 20:33

My nearly 15 yo gets £80 a month into her account plus her phone contract. This is meant to cover everything other than non-essential clothes and toiletries. She is good at saving it. I appreciate we are lucky we can afford that though.

MotherDearest123 · 20/01/2019 20:34

It depends if you buy her things on top of this . Some parents give kids £100 for clothes , shoes , going out and that’s it . Others buy kids clothing and stationary ect and then give them £20-£30 to get anything of go for a meal with friends

ErickBroch · 20/01/2019 21:28

I got £10 a week from my dad as I didn't live with him. I get that things are more expensive now though. I would just do what you can afford.

exLtEveDallas · 20/01/2019 21:33

DD is Y9. I pay for her phone, toiletries, clothes etc. If she keeps her bedroom clean and tidy she gets £20/month to spend on 'tat'. She actually saves most of it, but then we live out in the sticks so she doesn't really have a lot to spend it on!

BackforGood · 20/01/2019 23:21

This is a question that comes up very, very regularly on MN, and you get as many answers as posters I think.
At 13 or 14, mine got £13 then £14 per month.

Titsywoo · 21/01/2019 10:35

My 14 year old gets £5 a week although I might up that soon since she is going out more.
