XmasReindeer12345 · 23/12/2018 17:24

My 12 year old wants her ears pierced In 2 places despite her sister (14) having none. Is this an okay age or should I say no ?

2 lobe piercings at the same time? Or does she have one already and wants them done again? Higher piercing?

Need more information

NicoAndTheNiners · 23/12/2018 17:44

Well a lot of schools won't allow it. But if they do I would say fine.

XmasReindeer12345 · 23/12/2018 18:00

She wants One lobe piercing and one at the top of the ear

Why not? It’s a piercing not a tattoo.

XmasReindeer12345 · 23/12/2018 18:01

Just looked and it’s called a cartilage piercing I think

NicoAndTheNiners · 23/12/2018 18:16

It's not permanent is it, can be taken out in the future if she wants.

XmasReindeer12345 · 23/12/2018 18:19

Yes I think , like a stud I’m assuming

12 is far too young.

Sounds like you've done your research though 🙄

XmasReindeer12345 · 23/12/2018 18:45

I know what they are I just wondered if it was age appropriate

I had my ears pierced in 3 places at 12 and it’s never ever been an issue. I’d let her, it’s hardly the same as a tattooed forehead.

AppleKatie · 23/12/2018 18:48

I would check her schools policy first.

If they don’t allow it it would be a firm no.

Also I had some crazy piercings as a teen that I took out for my first professional job. You can still see the holes although they are closed.

Things are a bit different now (I probably wouldn’t have had to take them straight out for job 1 now!) but even so, they don’t just disappear.

Not sure a reputable place would do a cartilage piercing on a child but I might be wrong.
My only reservation is that it's quite painful for a long while after. If you think she will be able to look after it properly and cope with the pain then fine. You can't sleep on it for a while so have to stop yourself turning over in your sleep, will she do this?
I have many piercings and even I get fed up of the soreness and not sleeping on it when I have a new one.

XmasReindeer12345 · 23/12/2018 19:44

Not sure if she is aware of this , I’ll let her know . How long is it sore for

Haggisfish · 23/12/2018 19:45

School will almost certainly not let her keep it in at school, cartilage one.

Aardvarkitsabloodyaardvark · 23/12/2018 20:21

2 in the ears no probs. I thought you were talking nose etc.

CherryPavlova · 23/12/2018 20:23

Ours were 16 before they were allowed pierced ears.

pumpkinpie01 · 23/12/2018 20:25

My DD had the cartilage piercing done a few months ago she couldn’t sleep on that side for about a week it was quite sore.

chocolatespiders · 23/12/2018 20:26

My dd had hers done top of ear 3 months ago. DD is 15- Very painful for 2 months and have heard the hardest place to heal. We used sea salt washes 3 times a day and she got a nasty bump on it. Luckily some fantastic piercing drops from Amazon have really cleared it up and bump finally gone!

yaela123 · 23/12/2018 20:27

That's quite common where we are. Maybe just let her have lobe to start with and then if she's responsible with looking after them etc then she can have the helix in a few months/whenever?

chocolatespiders · 23/12/2018 20:30

BPA Piercing aftercare is the product in case you go ahead! But I would only do sea salt rinses for first month. We bought cornish sea salt Smile

sunshineandshowers21 · 23/12/2018 20:36

just be aware that cartilage piercings are a nightmare at healing! i’ve had mine done nearby a year and it still gets sore if i knock it or get my hair wrapped around it. my sister had hers done at the same and hers got really infected - as did my friend’s when she had hers done a few years ago. i’ve got my lobes pierced four times, as well as my tragus, daith, forward helix, and rook and my cartilage by far took the most healing time. also if she does have it done make sure it’s with a needle and not a gun.

bathtimesanity · 23/12/2018 20:38

@XmasReindeer12345 cartilage are not allowed in schools so even having it done now in the Christmas hols it would not be long enough for it to heal (takes a good few months!) and be able to take out for school.

Most (reputable) piercing places also don't do cartilage on younger kids.

Also very painful and increased risk of infection with cartilage.

ManicLoki · 23/12/2018 20:40

Definitely check the school policy, many don't allow them.

My 15yo has one cartilage piercing but no others. It's allowed at school as she has no lobe piercing.. no I don't really see the logic of that either but there we are..

I'm happy for her to have ear piercings, it's not as if they're permanently visible.

XmasReindeer12345 · 23/12/2018 20:56

I have checked with schools policy and as long as it’s covered with tape she is fine

OP posts:
Haggisfish · 23/12/2018 21:06

Would she be happy to do that?
