My DH and I have 3 children. DD1 is almost 18. DD1 has a history of anorexia, self harm, depression and has had suicidal thoughts and has knowingly mixed prescribed medication with over the counter medication which you cannot take at the same time. Also takes laxatives occasionally when not needed, taken more than the recommended dose of panadol, taken medication when not needed like cough syrup and cold and flu tablets. Some of these she has bought herself and some she has just taken from the cupboard. DD had been seeing a psychiatrist and dietitian through CYMHS but has been discharged. DD has made her own appointments with councillors and recently just been referred to a new psychiatrist, so she is actively looking for help. I am not coping very well, I’m nearly always anxious. DD also has her driving licence. How do I find a balance between trying to keep her safe and alive and also not being too involved?

My DD who is a similar age has had various crises over the last 3 years, though not as serious as yours. The only advice I can give is

  • detach yourself as much as you can to save your stress for when you really have to be involved
  • go and see some kind of counsellor yourself

I would also get a lockable medicine cabinet. Then if she does OD on anything you won't blame yourself for having left stuff accessible.

It’s reaaly, really good that she’s actively trying to help herself. If you’re anxious, which I totally understand, I think you need to also actively seek ways to lessen the anxiety yourself. I’m not in the same situation but I’ve had a bit of a tough start to our year and have sought ways to improve my mental health. For me, going on a walk for about 30 mins, guided meditation, Counselling, and yoga have all really helped and I’ve recently started the Couch to 5.

Showing her that you are seeking ways to get a better mental health with also give her the message that these things can be temporary and with help, things can get better Smile

This book might help you too Thanks

Remove all medications containing paracetamol (Panadol, cold remedies) from the house. They are extremely toxic and cause liver damage with only a small overdose. It would not be approved for over the counter if invented today, I read somewhere!

Yes she can buy them herself, but that’s why you can on,y get mall packets.
