sensitive question about hairy armpits

dd is only 11. she has developed birds nests under her arms.she is VERY self conscious about it- and only going to get more of an issue with summer hols coming up.
so what do we do?
can anyone suggest a mild hair removing product? or should i just encourage her to be hairy?
I don't really want toget her into shaving at 11.
please be kind.

Immac do a sensitive hair removal cream but I don't know how sensitive - have you considered waxing? I know it seems an odd thing to suggest for an eleven year old but the effects will last ages and I knew a girl in my frist year at school who was already getting legs, underarms and bikini line waxed

Hi Cremolafoam- I started my periods at 11 and nothing was as much of a shock to an 11 yr old as that so I don't think shaving/removing the hair from under your DD's arms is too soon at all.

I guess you have to weigh up pros and cons -being teased etc.

Is she quite mature minded or do you think removing the hair will upset her?

Piffle · 06/06/2007 10:50

hmmm most hair removal creams are very chemical...
TBh I think shaving is nicer, less hassle too IMO
FWIW I started shaving my pits at 12, mum and Dad both helped me do it a like your dd I was so self conscious as I wore a lot of vest tops for athletics and gym etc

immac? no fun, also smelly and bathroom-consuming.

little electric razor she can use (eg) in her room with loud music on much better than wet shaving for the early stages, no cut hazard either.

eg tiny subtle battery one from Argos

use talc so it doesn't pull at the skin.

I have 2 DDs - 13 and 10. DD1 started shaving under her arms (with a battery operated shaver which can be used wet or dry) a couple of years ago and has recently started shaving her legs too. DD2 has just started to do under her arms as she is self concious when swimming or getting changed for PE. I did help her a few times but she's now happy to do it herself. I prefer the idea of them using the shavers than hair removal creams.

cremolafoam · 06/06/2007 10:58

thanks all. yes maybe an electric shaver would be good.i do have doubts about veet and immac- as i am very allergic to those things and have always used a razor.
poor wee thing.I think she still is a bit shocked about sudden hair growth.. will investigate electric shavers.

Just gone through this with dd (11) and found wonderful strawberryscented cream by Nair in Boots - sweet packaging too which appealed to her.

My 12yo shaves under her arms and her legs. Normal razor. She was apprehensive first couple of times and is still very careful but she can do it herself now. We showed her how to do it (me and her 15yo sister)and helped her the first couple of times until she got the idea.
I showed my 15yo when she was around the same age although she prefers a cream now for her legs.

I shaved at 12 and hid it from my mum cos I thought she would be mad! Used one of those razors you actually put the blades in and dry shaved! It woulda been best if I'd had help and guidance!

My 15 year old daughter hates using an eletric shaver. She gets on much beter with a Veto Cream and says iit hurts less then the shaver!
