Can anyone recommend a laptop for my 14 yr old son.he will need it primarily for school, homework etc.Ideally I would like to pay around £400-500 at most.

I’ve just bought this one (for me!) and I love it!

I wouldn't recommend getting that laptop the last poster said to get. The storage (hard drive or SSD) needs to be at least 256gb (1000gb = 1tb) as installing Windows takes up to 30GB of storage and with anything else that storage will fill up fast.

For RAM (Memory), 6GB is the bare minimum. Try to get 8GB if you can as Chrome (don't use Edge, personal opinion) can take up lots of Storage.

For Processors, never get an Intel Atom, Celeron and try to avoid Pentiums if you can. Atoms and Celerons are incredibly slow and will not be able to run Windows fast. 4 Cores is essential and a dual-core system will not be suitable for anything

Also do not get Norton or McAfee. They slow down your system as they are resource-intensive and are constantly running in the background. Windows Defender, which is built right into Windows is great at detecting anything going on and MalwareBytes AntiMalware is a great tool which I use on all PC's I have ever used to scan for anything.

When you first set up the laptop, use ninite.com, instead of having to bother with going to every individual website and finding the right install, just click on what programs you need (Chrome, Skype, Malwarebytes etc.) and it will install them all at once.

Hope this helps.

Try a Dell Inspiron 5000 core i3 (spring for i5 if you want to). Here's a link to Curry's Pc World, which is where I got mine from. www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/dell-inspiron-15-5000-15-6-intel-core-i3-laptop-1-tb-hdd-white-10182134-pdt.html Hope this helps!

I'd go to the dell outlet and get a refurb, you get a decent spec for that budget. They currently have 12% off and free delivery (friend is getting one for her DD) My DSs got laptops from there in 2013 and they got i5 processors for around £350 but they have gone up in price a fair bit since but you will get a decent i3 for your budget. Boys are still using the laptops now although they have desk tops too so laptops aren't used daily.

Concerned I have tried to find a laptop with all your ‘recommendations’ but i have come to the conclusion that unless I am minted (in which case i would be buying a MacBook) there is nothing out there for under £500 (see OPs post) that fits your criteria!!
What exactly do you suggest..please!!!
