My DD14 is now 6 foot tall. Those in the know- is she likely to get very much taller? Her periods started 6months ago and I'm sure I read somewhere you don't grow much after that. She's always been fine with her height until recently when she has started saying things like 'I'll never have a boyfriend' and calling herself freakishly tall or saying she's manly.
Everyone mentions it, I mean everyone- even teachers.
I don't want her confidence to slide. Any advice anyone could offer me to help her out through these self conscious teenage years?
Also, tall ladies out there- what are the benefits of being 6ft plus?

Oh and I am now actively annoyed when I see a woman taller than me. Being tall is MY thing!

Great to read all the posts and to hear that those of you who had an awkward teenage phase love your height now.

Agree with PP. I'm just under 6' and found it really tough at school. But now I can't imagine being any other way. It's definitely an advantage at work (particularly in a male dominated field). Can always look elegant without wearing heels (I also never learned to wear them and would advocate practicing early if she wants to keep the option open!)

Above all, I would suggest that you continue telling her how beautiful she is and how lucky she is to be tall. It really doesn't feel like it as a teenager and I'm so pleased my parents were so quick to call me out for slouching to try to be smaller!

Easy to tell her she's beautiful because she is- I'm biased of course but she is striking and once her acne has cleared and she realises she's a stunner then there will be no stopping her!

I'm 5'10.5, and have always loved it. When I was 14 I loved that most people thought I was older than that (I don't have a particularly young face either so that helped at that age).

My DP is shorter thanme. Has never bothered either of us. He says that he loves the fact that I'm taller than him.

It's hard to say, everyone is different. Have you calculated out her expected height?

I'm 5'10, I started my periods just after my 12th birthday, I was 5'2 at the time. I was still growing until I was 17 although my feet stayed the same size as they were when I was 12. People on here will be adamant that you only grow for a certain time after your periods start but it definitely didn't happen like that for me.

It is good being tall although I didn't like it much as a teenager in the 1980s. It was very unusual then and clothes shopping was a nightmare. It's a lot easier now and kids are taller.

We used the parental height calculator for our boys and it gave a prediction of between 6'2 and 6'5. One is 6'3 at age 18 the other is 6'2.5 but only just turned 17. I don't think they'll grow much more but DH says he was a late grower so they may squeak another inch. So, for us the charts are pretty spot on.

DD 1 (age 20) is six feet tall, size ten feet. With a lot of encouragement from me and her dad and lots of friends, she's developed the art of swooshing into a room as though she owns the place. And routinely wears another 2 inches of heel just to be on the safe side.

She has an adoring boyfriend who she is refusing to get engaged to formally on the grounds she's far too busy with her university stuff.

All very good :-)

My DD1 was 5 ft 8 when she left for University at 18...and was 5 ft 10 a year later!!! However she didn't start her periods until she was 15 and is very thin, so perhaps still had growth left to do. She stopped growing at 20 at 5 '11, and is tall, elegant and works it!
Her sister is barely 5 ft 3 and very jealous of DD1's height!

I have a colleague who is over 6 ft tall and quite sturdily/athletically built, but she has incredible posture and carries herself very well to the point that she moves with a real elegance and confidence.

I don't know if it just comes naturally to her or if she's had some form of training.

I know it's a very old fashioned concept but could it be worth having some kind of deportment lessons for your dd to give her more physical confidence?

Yes DD 5 10 and 13 she has only grown half an inch since her periods started a year ago.
I was tall it was awFul growing up as my parents weren’t tall so I felt freaky.
Any sports she is interested in where her height would be an advantage?
Has she visited a Long Tall Sally shop most of the staff are tall? Some or most of the clothes will be old fashioned for her but she will feel less freakish among other tall people.
Their are various Tall FB groups. Long Tall Sally buy sell and trade FB site is more than selling clothes but provides advice on where to get teenage prom dresses and could offer supportive encouragement to you.
If her posture is good and she behaves confidently she will look better and feel better it will also help with her health and spine later on.
Good things about being tall. You can spot the good looking men when out and about and easily make eye contact with them.
You can get served quickly in bars.
Tall women often do better in the world of work as they are often seen as leaders inspiring confidence.
When you are tall you can look good in flats or heels you don’t need to wear heels.
You usually feel the rain first.
You can reach the top shelves in supermarkets.
Many of her smaller friends will be so envious of her height.

Surely it's an absolute boon for her competitive swimming? Has she looked up the heights of some of the elite female swimmers??
Freya Anderson was the British star of the recent European Championships - she's 17 and 6'3"
Being tall is the thing I like MOST about my body.
The boys her age will shoot up soon and bypass her so she won't feel out of place.
