Listening to the audiobook on youtube shows it takes about 10 hours-ish, maybe listening might be easier than reading it?

The bbc adaptation with Colin Firth and Jennifer EARLE is very close to the book so if she’s in a rush to finish, that might help. It was a series of about 8 episodes I think, available on dvd.
The only big difference I remember is the joint wedding at the end. Most of the big speeches are in there word for word.

The version with Keira Knightly is much less true to the book..

It really is not that long a read! The book is divided into sections with letters at the key turning points. In the bbc CF/JE version the content of letters are turned around and the modernised language and imagery (lake, fencing) could mislead her. However the characterisation and chronology is relatively accurate.

She's still got ages surely if school hasn't started yet? How long until she starts? In my experience the first few weeks have always focused on just the first few chapters. Learning to read for long periods of time/regularly will really help her in all subjects. But if she really feels she cant take it all in, these are some of the key parts that she should definitely know:

  • Arrival of Bingley and Darcy + Meryton Ball
  • Netherfield Ball
  • Different opinions of marriage between Charlotte and Elizabeth
  • Arrival of Mr Collins
  • First impressions of the main houses (Pemberly, Netherfield, Rosings and Collins' house)
  • Collins proposal
  • Darcys proposals
  • Darcys letter
  • Arrival of and impressions of Wickham
  • Darcy and Wickhams relationship
  • Charlotte's marriage
  • Georgianas seduction
  • Lydias marriage
  • The Bennets' marriage and parenting.

I'd advise against relying on either tv/film adaptation because part of what she'll be studying is the way that Austen crafts language and forms sentences. But they might help get her hooked or at least familiar with what happens.

OP the BBC version and the Keira Knightley version are both on Netflix, as other posters suggest, watching it first would probably help, sometimes the writing style is quite challenging for readers new to it.

Sarahandduck18 · 14/08/2018 18:25

I found it easy to read after knowing the tv series inside out.

hlr1987 · 14/08/2018 18:47

If she reads it quickly she probably won't get the quirks of her writing- which will be what any questions will be about. None of Austen's novels are about plot, they're about the characters. The TV adaptation is very good because it's so long and doesn't cut as much dialogue. You are supposed to get a feeling that not much physically happens in-between gossiping moments. I would get her to watch Emma and the bbcs version of persuation as well as a lot of the characters being ridiculous is easier to see in the writing after watching it.

I really like the long TV adaptation (I think it’s on Netflix). It is important to read the book, but if she would find it easier to follow having seen it, I think it could be a worthwhile watch. It’s hibestl one of my all time favourite books, and I’m not usually a lover of classics.

Thanks all
She is reading along with audio book
Keeping her concentration going
The challenge would be to structure her answer acc to OCR question.. with new style question there is no sample question to refer to apart from one published on ocr .... freaking scary ... any links or website please?
