Does your teenager have a high-sleeper, and are they comfortable?

If I get ds1 (10) a high-sleeper, I'd want him to be comfortable in it for several years yet.

He's tall: well over 5' already, and according to the charts will 6' before he's 14

Not sure whether my ds's qualifies as a high sleeper, it's a cabin bed with chests of drawers and cupboards underneath which is brill for storage.

It's exactly the same size as a normal single bed, if not maybe a bit bigger, certainly a 6 footer would be ok in it.

Have you seen those ones in the IKEA catalogue? I was thinking of swapping the one he has for one of those as they're doubles and you can get a sofa underneath them, among other things.

Only prob is you wouldn't want one if you have low ceilings!

Mine have had mid-sleepers but they did outgrow them (now 5'10" and 6'2"). The high and mid sleepers are popular when kids are in primary school but most teenagers like lower beds and will want a double bed if possible that they can spread themselves out in - or invite boyfriend/girlfriend to share

Thanks.
Our ceilings are high, so that's not a problem. But one of the rooms is small: wouldn't fit a double bed.

That's why I'm looking for a solution to maximise space. But maybe a high sleeper isn't it at this age.

Atm they share (bunk beds) in the small room, and have the huge room as a shared playroom.

One problem with any sort of bunk bed is that it has comparatively high sides. By the time your DS is 14 his feet will be bashing the sides regularly at night. The other problem is that a teenager may consider it a bit childish. If you can find one that looks teenagerish rather than childish he may like it for longer and you will have the space underneath for a desk/chair or whatever.

DD1 realised how close she was to all the cobwebs up there so we had to get rid of it as she just slept on the floor after the first week.

Also it was a metal one and very creaky.
I wouldn't recommend them.

MarsLady · 30/05/2007 21:07

Even with high ceilings the teens don't like them. Too hot up there.

DS1 put his mattress on the floor under his and slept there. Eventually got rid of it!

I agree with Jura, they are a complete pain. Ds had one from 9 years old to 12. He used to sleep hanging onto bars as it was the only way he could "spread out"

They are a real pain when they are ill, ds often too weak to stagger up ladder when ill. They clank and creak, and putting bedclothes on is a complete nightmare.

They seem to be an ideal solution, but they aren't. They just cretae another set of problems. I wish I had known all pitfalls before I bought one.

Ds outgrew his at about 11 years old. He has a double bed now (on the floor)

DD2 (17) sleeps in a high sleeper and yes she is comfortable in it. It is wooden and sometimes gets a bit loose and creaky. When that happens DH just tightens it with the tol that was provided. It was origenally bought for DD1 when she was 14 and she slept in it until she wnt to UNI aged 18.
Neither of them consider it childish it gives them much more space in a small bedroom

Oh great - mixed opinions!
Thanks all

dd had a high sleeper. When we got it it was so high it was like getting into a drawer up there - made me all panicky. So we sawed a bit off the legs. She loved it up there - even though phobic about spiders! Gradually over the years the legs got sawn off bit by bit. Now it's normal double bed height, but she's decided she wants it a bit higher...
