“Turn off the WiFi”

Can you all pls explain how this works if they have phones? Am I missing something?

They may not have data on their phones, or limited data. Which means they can’t use 4g

doradoo · 17/07/2018 18:54

I don’t think you can, they can use their data if WiFi not available- apparently there are apps you can install, and password protect, on their phones which do a similar job... not managed that yet, my DS says it’s ‚applock‘ on Android — but I think that’s just for blocking apps rather than time limiting

Watching with interest for any other solutions.

WooYa · 17/07/2018 18:56

If they don't have data then they can't use their phones, also consoles (Xbox etc) and iPads connect via WiFi so they can't use them until WiFi is back
On

ILoveDolly · 17/07/2018 18:58

I pay for my dd phone, there is an option to turn off the use of 4g and data as a ballplayer. I could also change my WiFi password if I wanted to so she couldn't use it. If I ever get a £100 downloads bill again that is exactly what I will do.

You wrap your entire home in tinfoil creating a faraday cage to block all signals. Then you take it all off again in the morning.

ILoveDolly · 17/07/2018 18:59

Sorry that should read billpayer

Notevilstepmother · 17/07/2018 19:03

Take the phones away.

HarshingMyMellow · 17/07/2018 19:20

With BT you can log into the advanced WiFi settings and choose to kick certain devices from the connection.

Then change the WiFi password so they can't get back on without asking.

Luckything50 · 17/07/2018 21:01

Mellow I have BT but they just turn off WiFi on their phones/iPads and use their data.
I realise that taking these items away is an option but was hoping to avoid that battle. Depriving them of their Xbox when they have all the other options is pointless.
Ah well, once more unto the breech and all that...

Mine usually use their data pretty quickly when the Wifi goes off in the evenings. So although the first few nights they can continue on their phones, it soon runs out. Mwahahahahaha

bichonbaby · 17/07/2018 21:10

How can this be done for sky broadband please?

Ohlellykelly · 17/07/2018 21:17

I access the router page, google for your router's page address. For example mine is 192.168.1.254. Username is usually admin and password might be your wifi password, or indeed the word Password.

Find access restrictions, or block users, or access control. You need to know the mac address of the devices you want to block and then choose which times to restrict access.

The mac address is usually.found in settings on an iPhone, under general and then about.

I use Fing, it's an app that tells you which devices are using your wifi.

gingerparkin · 18/07/2018 09:06

Hi @ohlellykelly
Do you mind sharing who your broadband provider is? What you have described is exactly what I am trying to do at the moment.

titchy · 18/07/2018 09:08

However good the 4g signal is in your house it'll never be fast enough for gaming. Plus data runs out pretty quickly, unless you have unlimited.

Ohlellykelly · 18/07/2018 19:44

@gingerparkin I'm with plusnet. I can help if you still need?

gingerparkin · 18/07/2018 23:00

Thanks so much for ohlellykelly, I am looking to change providers so could know that my screen battle solution is feasible! I'll come back with more questions I am sure.

FairySpringer · 19/07/2018 09:54

We take our 14 year old's phone away at 9.30pm. We also block social media from this time, do when she then moves on to her iPad, she's only on Netflix or something similar.

orangeicecream · 14/08/2018 21:40

My kids are 11&12 but I have a "circle" device at home where I can create individual profiles, assign any WiFi devices and set a time limit and a bedtime where sign is lost to some or all devices. The time limit also works outside of the home WiFi signal if you upgrade to the "go" app for £4.99 per month. I also have "parent link" app their phones which means I can see their location, lock certain apps, lock the phone entirely and set time limits. My two have no self control at all! Confused I'm pleased with the current set up.
