What are they up to this Summer?

My DS is currently away with NCS (having a great time)

We have got a family week away booked.

He is also going to the Reading Festival in August (gulp)

He will be doing a lot of sitting around playing fortnite

I would love to hear what your teens are up to as three months is a long time to fill.

TIA.

I also thought three months would be hard to fill, but it's sortng itself out. DofE expedition next week, followed by a couple of days to recover. The following week she has two nice days out planned - one with me and one with a friend. Plus sixth form induction day. Then it's the week of her 16th birthday (finally!) which will probably get filled up with birthday related stuff.

Once we're into the actual summer holidays she has a family holiday, a week long residential and a week volunteering at our church playscheme. After which i suspect she'll probably be happy to mooch around reading and doing nothing much till term starts again.

HRTpatch · 29/06/2018 14:31

My ds worked all summer and went to Reading.

NotEnoughTime · 29/06/2018 14:33

Wow-AChicken it sounds like she has got a really good Summer lined up. Fair play to her.

I forgot my DS had his sixth form induction day last week. Hopefully he will get the results he needs to stay on.

My dd has spent some time with her Dad, will be helping out with a couple of activites at school, then a week or so to do nothing/meet friends before we go on our holidays....day after we return from holiday she is doing NCS for 4 weeks which then leaves a couple of weeks before college starts!

TheThirdOfHerName · 29/06/2018 14:49

DS2 is on work experience this week.

Then he is planning the following:
A lot of music practice to make up for time missed when revising.
Orchestra tour
Volunteering in local library (Reading Hack)
Family holiday
Physics summer school
Maths pre-A-level course
Reading up on other A-level subjects
Several Dungeons & Dragons campaigns with friends.

NotEnoughTime · 29/06/2018 14:57

I'm very impressed with all your DC. Good for them. Teenagers often get a bad press for being idle but this lot sound dynamic! (maybe it's because their the DC of Mumsnetters Grin) I think it's really important to have a balance between "be-ing" and "do-ing"

I hope it will be a fab summer for all our teens-I think they deserve it after those tough exams :)

My dd actually doesn’t have much planned. She’s currently off in the Channel Islands for sixth form induction then she has a spa weekend for her friends birthday. She has ncs at the end of next month. She has taken up running and cycling and I know her sixth form is setting a summer holiday homework project so she’ll able off doing things for that. She also sells her art online so she’ll be looking to get a few more things done now exam pressure is off.

Other then that I imagine she’ll be pottering around the house with her friends

BackforGood · 29/06/2018 15:24

Various 6th form induction days (hasn't made up her mind yet which one to go to so is attending them all)
NCS - so that's 3 weeks later in the Summer
Work - just odd shifts but it breaks up the week
Lots of long walks with her friend and friend's dog (yup - in the shade of woods where they have gone for a picnic today, or down by a pool he swims in)
Few bits and pieces with Explorers
Tidying up her room - throwing out all the notes from subjects she won't do anymore
Nearer the time, there will be a bit of shopping for 6th form clothes.
she does cook for us sometimes too
A lot of sitting around putting the world to rights.

BackforGood · 29/06/2018 15:27

Though it's only 2 months and a week here.

Finished exams last week, so one week of June and then July and August.

TheThirdOfHerName · 29/06/2018 16:07

NotEnoughTime DS1 did much less in the summer after his GCSEs. He went on a school trip to Mexico and also volunteered at a children's holiday club for a week, but the rest of the time was spent sleeping and hanging out with his friends.

AChickenCalledKorma · 29/06/2018 18:54

Must admit I'm finding this thread reassuring. Quite a few people have seemed surprised that DD1 is not looking for a summer holiday job. But she's not quite 16 yet and it hadn't really crossed her mind or mine. I think she probably has a reasonable balance of worthwhile stuff and relaxation, without adding gainful employment into the mix.

KingscoteStaff · 30/06/2018 07:14

School cricket festival next week.
Two weeks work coaching little ones at summer cricket camps.
Week in France with a friend (hooray for parents of only children who are keen to take a mate along!)
Extended family golf trip (can’t think of anything more ghastly myself, but they seem to like it...)
2 week rugby tour
Reading festival

Plus a massive amount of pre-reading for his Politics, History and Philosophy courses. Bizarrely, the English department is the only one that hasn’t sent him a reading list.

Oh, and at some point we will have to go shopping for a suit!

Fontofnoknowledge · 30/06/2018 08:01

Took her away with two others mums and 16 yr olds , the moment exams finished. Then prom. Couple of parties. Then sixth form induction. On the 'spare days ' she's been working and will then crack on with full time work until Boardmaster festival followed by Reading.. (these don't come cheap) Hopefully fit in a week somewhere with them all at some point.

Fontofnoknowledge · 30/06/2018 08:05

Most importantly, no study. Nothing, no 'pre reading' no prep, no thought of school or Alevels or anything related to learning. She has done enough and deserves a complete break from our obsessive education system. 3 glorious months in good weather to have nothing but FUN . The reward for hard work. They will never be 16 again and I want her to enjoy every minute!

TheThirdOfHerName · 30/06/2018 08:52

For DS2, doing Maths and reading about Physics is fun and an activity he chooses to do for relaxation / enjoyment.

ferrier · 30/06/2018 08:53

Absolutely nothing and having a good time chilling out with friends.

TheThirdOfHerName · 30/06/2018 08:53

Whereas for DS1, I don't think he went near a textbook from mid-June to the beginning of September.

livingontheedgeee · 30/06/2018 14:59

DD17 doing two festivals and taking a trip to Disneyland Paris with friends.

Rest of the time works three days a week at National Trust which she loves and gives her some spending money for her leisure activities.

The rest of the time she'll spend with me, friends, sleep late, work on her project for university application and generally get as much downtime as she can before school starts again.

DailyMaiIisMyBogRoll · 02/07/2018 07:13

@Fontofnoknowledge
“3 glorious months in good weather to have nothing but FUN . The reward for hard work. They will never be 16 again and I want her to enjoy every minute!”

My sentiments EXACTLY!

ncsmummy · 02/07/2018 07:28

My DS is keeping up his paper round and we have a family holiday in 2 weeks time, apart from that he is just relaxing and seeing friends. As PP said - he will never be 16 again and he deserves to enjoy it however he chooses because he has worked so hard and put himself under a lot of pressure.

JufusMum · 02/07/2018 22:53

Two weeks of back to back sixth form inductions, family holiday, lots of dog-sitting for family friends.

CeeCeeMacFay · 03/07/2018 21:38

Work experience
Time with his dad
College induction days
Portugal with a mate
Italy with me
Leeds festival
Working for our business
Hanging round the skate park with his mates

PingPongBat · 04/07/2018 16:38

DD declared herself bored within 24 hours of finishing exams Hmm.

She's had one shopping trip with a friend (who's turning out to be not such a good friend but that's a whole other thread), been in school to help out for new intake days & had her own 6th form induction, but that's about it. Most of her friends are the year below & they're all in school for another two and a half weeks. She's got 10 days away with us & DS in a few weeks, & a cousin is visiting from overseas at some point, but with 2 months to go until 6th form there's not a lot else on her horizon. She keeps mentioning looking for work & has approached a few pubs / cafes but hasn't followed up on anything yet.
