Is there a publication that you’d recommend a newly-sexually-active person should read?

I thought I was doing well at having frank conversations with dd, but she mentioned buying a bottle of lube yesterday and I freaked out. I managed to a) suggest she check it was water-based and b) communicated that if her boyfriend was being a considerate partner it shouldn’t be needed, but I really am sufficiently prudish to not want to have to provide further detail.
Quite happy to guide her to a manual, though. I’m out of touch but if anyone knows a fabulous publication of good suggestions and conteracts pervasive porn culture I’d love to here about it!

I don't know either but am interested - I wonder if the feminism board might be a good place to post this?

Good on you for parenting in a way that means your DD feels able to discuss this with you! I don't have any suggestions for literature but I would add that, considerate partner or not, some people just need lube (or indeed just like using it)... Careful not to scare your DD into thinking she's abnormal if she does need it :-)

I liked The Guide To Getting It On by Paul Joannides when I was a teenager

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll have a look. I’d think it very strange for a healthy young person to need lube. (Only used it personally when middle aged and breastfeeding.)
After a bit of googling I found this the other day:
www.amazon.co.uk/Doing-Lets-Talk-About-Sex/dp/1526360039?tag=mumsnetforum-21
and posted it on another thread. Might be helpful for other interested folk.

It’s not unusual to want to use lube. They wouldn’t sell so much of the stuff if it was Smile

Idontmeanto · 12/04/2018 22:27

bloody hell! The guide to Getting it On is £45 on Amazon!

JiltedJohnsJulie fair enough. I just wonder if the increased availability of porn and male expectations are partly responsible for that.

I just wonder if the increased availability of porn and male expectations are partly responsible for that. maybe, or maybe her boyfriend is just really crap at foreplay?

Idontmeanto · 12/04/2018 22:38

They are only 16, give the poor lad a chance! (But quite possible!)

It’s a lot cheaper on eBay.

7DaysAWeek · 13/04/2018 12:08

Not to scare you to much but as a teenager when i used lube it wasn't for PIV sex Blush (and it was my idea so nothing to do with porn and male expectations)

Spam88 · 13/04/2018 12:12

The only time I've used lube was when I was in my first relationship around 18, and it wasn't due to any lack of consideration on my boyfriend's part, it's just all part of the fun of exploring sex, so I wouldn't be worrying about that. Plus you can get ones that tingle and all sorts (however, I do not, I repeat, DO NOT recommend the durex one that heats up).

TinyPawz · 13/04/2018 12:37

@Spam88 I actually snorted then winced at the memory
