Pocket money

What's a reasonable amount of pocket money for a sixteen year old? Also when do you stop giving them pocket money altogether?

Mine get £50 a month and I also pay their phone contracts. They do have help around the house, empty dishwasher, sort their own clothes, bedrooms. Occasionally vacuum, tidy, lay table, run errands etc. Just household team work.

£10 a week and phone contract. I'd say encourage a Saturday job, but with zero contracts around, I don't think there are many of these anymore.

Also set jobs that they have to do. My DS is a terrible procrastinator/lazy git, it was like pulling teeth getting him to do his room.

m0therofdragons · 27/03/2018 11:44

I used to get my child benefit plus £20 but had to buy all clothes and make up etc from that.

jaimelannistersgoldenhand · 27/03/2018 12:07

He has a part-time job that pays well for a teen so just phone contract and some ad hoc clothing bits.

BearSoFair · 27/03/2018 17:00

Ds1 gets £50 and we buy him 'essentials', if there's clothes or something that he just likes and wants, he pays. He's just turned 16, not really sure when we'll stop, I've never really thought about it...assuming he'll get a part time job during college, probably then.

BearSoFair · 27/03/2018 17:00

That's £50 a month btw.

JoJoSM2 · 27/03/2018 17:17

Well it depends on what you want them to buy with it, e.g. just treats or the odd ticket to the cinema or clothes, birthday presents for friends etc.

AlexanderHamilton · 27/03/2018 17:21

Dd gets £35 per month. She is in Year 11. Next year she will need to buy lunches & factor in lots of extra travel & college expenses. She will be at college 45 miles away with her fellow students mostly living in nearby lodgings. Her dad works there so her travel is accounted for most days but I’m wondering how much to up her money by. A part time job isn’t readable.

K1092902 · 27/03/2018 17:30

No set amount per say was given here. From teen we based whatever DD was doing at the weekend on how much we gave her- some weekends she would just be going round to her friends house so we just give the odd couple of quid to go the shop etc, other weeks more if she was say going to the cinema and for a meal. Phone contract paid for and £150 every 3 months for new clothes. Everything else was brought as christmas or birthday presents aside from the odd bits of makeup etc

Mine got £100 a month plus I paid phone.
Everything came out of it.
They also had Saturday jobs.
I paid it into their bank every month

K1092902 · 27/03/2018 17:33

Alexander- £5 a day for food is more than enough, especially as the majority of 16 year olds i know eat cheap junk anyway. What other expenses will she have??

AlexanderHamilton · 27/03/2018 18:13

I’m hoping she will take packed lunches most days but they do a soup & sandwich option for about £3.

Other expenses - dancewear especially tights & ballet shoes & hair stuff. Trips, taxis into town, occasional train fare home. Stationery & academic stuff I guess.

Not really sure what else.

£15 a week into her bank, I pay for mobile ( capped contract ), basic toiletries, underwear, basic footwear, school uniform and a winter coat. She then has £200 a year clothing allowance to spend when she wants. She tends to ask for clothes etc for Xmas/birthdays from extended family. She pays subs for her clubs, I pay for extra camps/trips etc. She sits her GCSEs this year and already knows once they are done I expect her to start looking for a part time job around sixth form.

This is asked regularly on MN, and the answers vary hugely.
Also, what people include in the 'spends' can vary, and some dc also get different money from other people - Grandparents, or other parent.
My 16 yr old gets £16 per month. If she wants credit on her phone it comes from that.
My dc get / got pocket money up to and including August of Yr13, regardless of where their birthday was in the year.
