AIBU to ask my daughter pay for her bus fares?

My daughter is 17 years old and just started a job earning £700 a month, she is also doing her A Levels. We usually pay for her bus pass, but as she is now warning is it unreasonable to get her to pay for them now? As it stands we pay for everything in the house, food, bills, etc. We do not charge any rent and pay for days out, etc., but we have a total of 4 children, 2 of mine and 2 of my fiancées. With a total of 4 children and their expenses, is it an unreasonable to ask her to pay her bus pass, approx £40 per month?

is she workign long hours? does she have a plan in mind? off to uni? i am not sure i would particularly if s he was saving

FissionChips · 06/03/2018 07:11

Of course it’s not unreasonable, she’s earning, I’m surprised she hasn't just started buying it herself tbh.

confuseddaddotcom1 · 06/03/2018 07:13

She’s plans on saving some for a car, but overall she wants to spend the money on herself and has a list of items.

Would need to know more information to answer. How is she able to earn £700 per month at the same time as doing A Levels?

PrincessHairyMclary · 06/03/2018 07:14

Nope, if she's earning that kind of money she can cover herself once I started working I paid for my own expenses.
I would ask for a (10%) contribution to the household as well but put it in savings for her. She needs to learn to budget so this is a great way of doing so whilst she has the safety net of being at home.

confuseddaddotcom1 · 06/03/2018 07:15

She is working 20 hours per week at roughly £8.50 an hour. Not bad for a 17 year old.

How can she work 20 hours and still study enough to pass her A'levels? My daughter had a job but still studied most evenings. She only worked 5 hours a week.

crazydoglady6867 · 06/03/2018 07:18

I would be charging board, let alone making her pay for her own travel.

SuperBeagle · 06/03/2018 07:18

No, she should be paying for it herself.

It's all well and good that she wants to spend money on things she wants, but being almost an adult, she also needs to learn the value of money and how to prioritise her spending. Otherwise she'll continue to blow through her money with no insight into how to save/prioritise/spend wisely.

bastardkitty · 06/03/2018 07:18

I would be very concerned about her working so much and not having enogh time to spend on homework and study. But I don't think it's unreasonable to expect her to pay for her own bus pass. Of course she doesn't pay rent. She's still at school.

LadyLapsang · 06/03/2018 07:18

What is she doing to earn 700.00 pm? I would be concerned that she is working too many hours to reach her full potential at A level.

Slartybartfast · 06/03/2018 07:18

does she not got out with her friends?

GnotherGnu · 06/03/2018 07:19

20 hours a week si way too much if she wants to get a reasonable grade for her A level.

Appuskidu · 06/03/2018 07:21

What job is she doing?!

I’d be very worried she was doing too much work and her A levels would suffer.

BertrandRussell · 06/03/2018 07:21

She can't possibly pass her A levels if she's doing 20 hours paid work a week!

Fionne · 06/03/2018 07:23

Op, if she’s working those hours and studying she deserves to keep every penny she gets.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 06/03/2018 07:24

No way. She's still at school. She shouldn't be paying rent or contributing to bills.

And I think 20 hours is too much on top of A levels.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/03/2018 07:25

I’d be worrying about her A levels.

No she shouldn’t pay for her bus fare.

strawberrysparkle · 06/03/2018 07:26

Well done her for working! I worked 40 hours a week plus completed mine so it is doable but hard work.

I don't think working 20 hours is too much around study! I would however expect her to pay for her bus pass.

junebirthdaygirl · 06/03/2018 07:27

I wouldn't grt her to pay anything concerned with school. Nut let her pay for everything she needs herself
: clothes, makeup etc. And save for college. I presume there is a mistake in the amounts you quoted.

Slartybartfast · 06/03/2018 07:30

A tenner a week bus fare?
depends on your family situation but if this bus gets her to college then unless she gets a bursary you should stump up imo
my dd buys her own but only because she gets a bursary and she gets the money back

IHaveACuntingPlan · 06/03/2018 07:32

I worked 20+ hours a week at the same time as my A levels and degree and found it easily manageable.
In answer to your question, yes, I would expect her to begin contributing to or paying for things such as her bus pass and/or driving licence. Now is the timee for her to learn how to set and manage a budget.

Tinseltower · 06/03/2018 07:40

That’s too many hours to be working for. Has she got enough time to study? I would pay her his pass but not pay for anything else.

Toffeelatteplease · 06/03/2018 07:42

Of course it's not unreasonable. That's a sizable wage.

It's not hard to work 20 hrs a week during your A levels either.eg 4 nights a week 4pm to 9pm , or Saturday and sunday 7 hrs each and one night a week. I did almost exactly that growing up during Alevels and I did more Alevels than most and still went out until 2am every now and then

Joinourclub · 06/03/2018 07:44

At 17 I wouldn't be expecting her to pay rent or contribute to the household bills. Cars/driving lessons/insurance etc are all very expensive, so I would let her save for that.

However, if you are hard up and it is a struggle for you to find the bus fare, then its not unreasonable for her to pay for it herself. But I think that's better fine by having a honest conversation about finances with her rather than expecting her to be grateful that you don't charge her rent.
