my 13 nearly 14 year old dd is desperate to earn some money. I can't afford to pay her much to do anything around here! I used to work in Boots and did that from about 14 until I was 22 and had finsihed college. Worked saturdays and then mondays too when at college as well as all the holidays. But what do kids do now? Any ideas welcome!

DS2 is 14 and has had a paper round for over a year - he does Mon-Sat and gets £22 a week inc a £5 bonus as long as he does all 6 days - discourages them from missing the days they don't feel like getting up!

The paper shop got the employment permit form from the LEA and we had to produce a photocopy of his birth cert to go with it.

ska, could your DD cycle to the village or is the road dangerous?

My DS only got £9 for 6 days delivery in our village - involved delivering 30-40 papers over a distance of more than 1 mile. HIs friends in neighbouring village got around double for delivering half the number of papers in a smaller area - market forces must be at work here.

My oldest earns extra money - all from us as we are quite remote, by babysitting (very sensible, caring boy) and various tasks that really need doing such as mucking out stables, shovelling stones into gateways and so on - I pay him a reasonable wage that we agree beforehand. Ds2 is keen to earn money from a third source, but since any job would involve serious taxi endeavours on my behalf am not too keen (he's too young anyway at nearly 12)
