Being forced to buy leaver hoodies?

singingdeborah · 05/02/2018 16:38

DD1 and 2 are in Year 11, and the teachers are organising Year 11 Leaver hoodies; fair enough, one would think. DD1 really hasn't enjoyed time at school due to not getting along well with peers and coping with stress poorly and has told me multiple times she doesn't want a hoodie as she'd never wear it and she doesn't really want to be reminded of school. DD2 wanted one so I handed in the form for her.

I get a call from DD1's form teacher telling me I have to order a hoodie (which are £25!) as the order has already been placed on 67 hoodies (the number of students in Year 11).

Am I right to be angry at this? DD1 has expressed her distaste towards them and now I'm being forced to waste £25 on a hoodie she will never wear.

Advice, anyone?

I would refuse!! They can't make you buy one, surely?

milkmoustache · 05/02/2018 16:43

I do understand your DD not wanting one. There is no way that the teacher can make you hand over any money, hopefully if she knows your DD at all, and has an understanding of her experience at school, then she will back off. You can politely but firmly explain that you respect your daughter's decision.

Myddognearlyatethedeliveryman · 05/02/2018 16:44

Op be thankful (tho def don't pay) the dps from dd year 6 have organised a leavers do that includes a hoody, pizza hut and a limo that is costing over £500 for an hour.
There are 8 leavers including dd. I have posted on the group chat not to include dd in the limo plans!! Then I left the chat swiftly!!

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 05/02/2018 16:47

When will the hoodies be worn?
You definitely don't have to buy something that will be worn once. It's not going to be mandatory to buy.

Pythonesque · 05/02/2018 16:47

If they are foolish enough to have ordered for everyone without checking first that's their lookout, in my opinion.

They cannot make you buy it. Their fault if they didn't check eho wanted it before ordering. Make it clear they are not to hassle your dd about this.
Leaver hoodies are a fucking rip off.

Bananalanacake · 05/02/2018 16:55

We didn't have leaver anything in my day, we just fucked offGrin

PuppyMonkey · 05/02/2018 16:56

Definitely say no. Tell them she is allergic. Grin

Weezol · 05/02/2018 16:59

Pythonesque Has it. Sounds as if the teacher fucked up and is now pressuring you to buy in order to hide their mistake.
Continue to refuse and, if necessary, block the teacher on email/phone and wait it out.

AJPTaylor · 05/02/2018 17:00

Well, they are bonkers

They have pre ordered 70 odd of the things for Year 11s before the money is actually in their hands?
Have they ever met a year 11? Grin

Ohyesiam · 05/02/2018 17:00

Ignore the request.
I'm with your daughter, the fewer reminders of school the better.

AJPTaylor · 05/02/2018 17:04

I am pretty sure when dd2 left i found about 10 letters in her bag saying " if you dont order a leavers hoodie and book by x date you cant have one"
Dd2 really didnt want one!

Frazzled2207 · 05/02/2018 17:04

The teacher is trying to cover up his/her mistake in ordering them before getting the money in.

Definitely don't pay!

specialsubject · 05/02/2018 17:05

The things get worn for a month or two, and as they are sweatshirt not fleece they are useless : get soaked in rain, too hot otherwise.

Naff as, too.

singingdeborah · 05/02/2018 17:06

Thanks for the support everyone.

Leaver hoodies are expected to be worn on the last day of school before they begin study leave as there is a leaver's service and BBQ for all Year 11s, even then I don't see any real reason as to why this hoodie must be bought for that.

I am writing an email regarding DD1's hoodie. What is particularly annoying is that DD1's form teacher fully understands that she has had a very poor experience in secondary school! Angry

Any ideas on how I should word the email?

mumonashoestring · 05/02/2018 17:12

I think I'd be inclined to quote the message about the pre-order, add 'Well that was silly" and leave it at that.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 05/02/2018 17:12

Dear teacher,
As you are aware, dd has not had a particularly happy experirnce at school this year. She not wish to purchase a hoodie , to mark this experience and therefore did not order one. Please do not raise this issue with her again - it is not her responsibility to compensate for the school not verifying numbers prior to ordering.
Yours etc

specialsubject · 05/02/2018 17:13

So there is compulsory uniform that costs £25 for one day? Outrageous.

Do you know any older teens? Borrow one of theirs .I doubt the school has specified which year of hoodie...

Weezol · 05/02/2018 17:54

Does your daughter want to be anywhere near this frankly, ridiculous 'Leavers Service'? It doesn't sound like it, and in her position I would be giving it a wide berth too.
Send Iwanna's email and leave it at that.

Coincidentally, doesn't d and v mean staying away from school for 48 hours? It's remarkably common in school age teens...

GreenTulips · 05/02/2018 17:58

Yep not there choice and it's not compulsory!
Dear Teacher,

We have not and will not be ordering a leavers hoodie for DD.

She does not wish to have lasting memories of her time at X school.

Yours

Mum

Dear teacher
Just to reiterate DD1 did not request a hoody. A hoody is not wanted. A hoody will not be paid for.

Parent.

I would also screen shot a list of uniform that’s required so if teacher
Comes back. Next email to include screen shot with the question - where is the hoody a compulsory part of the school uniform? It’s not.

Springtrolls · 05/02/2018 18:08

Anyway whatever happened to the school shirt being written all over?

Oh I wonder if teacher has a child in primary leaving this year or last and thought fab idea. One of the parents tried a leaving hoody on the rest of us. Very few where ordered and not worn in the end as the
Rest of the class just used their T-shirts.

WalkingUpTheMountain · 05/02/2018 18:12

Do not pay for one. And if your DD does not want to take part in the BBQ day, I would allow her to be off school 'ill'.
