Why are swimsuits so expensive???

(FFS I need Gin ) 16yo DD is going on a school trip (early March) which includes a swimming excursion, so needs a suit because she got fat has filled out. You can buy anything else for £5 but not one-piece suits.

To give her credit, DD has good taste and would attract MN levels of approval in her concern for hygiene, and so freaks out if I suggest she takes my admittedly naff spare swimsuit or anything 2nd hand. She is a very capable swimmer but only swims very rarely.

I am thinking I'll offer £20 & DD can cover any extra cost (she earns). How much ££ would you contribute towards a teen's swimsuit for a single trip? Thanks.

Does sports direct have anything suitable

Grumpbum · 27/01/2018 21:37

Try Wiggle

Sports Direct for proper swimwear, Primark for fashionable but less robust. Might not have much there till towards summer though.

Is this sort of thing any good? They do lots of colours

Dd's last one was £10 from Sports Direct

Try allens of kingsbury. Following a rec on here i bought a speedo swimsuit for my 9 yr old for €18 euro delivered to ireland. Delivery probably cheaper to UK. Quality and service was great !

NorthernSpirit · 27/01/2018 21:51

Sports Direct do inexpensive quality swimsuits and Primark do great 2 piece bikinis. I bought one last week for £11 and it’s great! Won’t be buying from M&S again!

lljkk · 27/01/2018 22:03

sweatshop direct, that's really good should have thought of that I buy everything else there.

Not adverse to Primark, either, but since DD can do things like dive & butterfly stroke I thought one-piece was best.

@JuliaSevern, i would wear that ugly green thing but DD would turn up her nose shriek horror at it.

I suggested these to her, so far. The navy one is £14 delivered.

Asos ?

lljkk · 27/01/2018 22:15

Gosh those suggestions were very useful. Especially the £5 one from Decathlon (+£4 postage, I think). I think my opening stance will be £10 towards the purchase & DD can fund more if she wants. Mega Thanks.

Ok. She'd probably turn up her nose at dd in hers then.

lljkk · 27/01/2018 22:19

I'm sure your DD is a lovely sensible creature, Julia unlike mine.

I was going to say Sports Direct too - my (lifeguard) swimmer dd is happy with them.
If it is clothing she isn't wearing a lot (you say she rarely swims), then yes, offer her a tenner towards one of the several linked to here, and if she turns her nose up she can take your tenner and add her own additional money for a specific one she prefers. Up to her then if it costs her of not. Tends to focus the mind in my teens anyway.

I've heard primark tankinis are great

itsbetterthanabox · 27/01/2018 23:00

Try boohoo.
I don't think everything five pounds is good for anything!

MumofTwoandaDog · 28/01/2018 12:39

Dd1 was a synchro swimmer so got through lots of costumes. TK Maxx were good - used to pick up brands like Maru, zoggs and speedo for about £5 to £9 - do look in children’s too though - they usually go up to a 36” and ignore size that the shop put on it and look at actual label on costume.
