Sanitary wear for a preteen?

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 21/01/2018 13:22

My 11 year old has started her periods. They’re very light so have given her liners to wear for now but I would love some help on recommendations for sanitary wear.
I did a quick search but the last post I could find was over ten years ago so the info is quite out of date.
I have got her a nice little bag to keep them in but have no idea what would be best. Lillets do a teen range, are there any others?
I use a cup having used tampons before that so have no idea about pads.

Dd was 10 and very quickly moved onto normal pads - usually Always.

MagicFajita · 21/01/2018 13:25

Boots do cotton panty liners. They're very comfy and small for a preteen. Just make sure her underwear is big enough for the liner. I've started getting my dd11 ladies underwear in small sizes and that works better.

Dd started at 9 and she uses Lilets teen range of pads and tampons

Goldmonday · 21/01/2018 13:43

Ever since I started my periods when I was 12 I have used bodyform sanitary towels (pink ones), swear by them.

dementedpixie · 21/01/2018 13:46

Dd started with lillets teen pads but they were very short and leaked a lot. She likes the bulky kotex ones instead. Bodyform are good. Always pads tend to be scented so I avoid them!

citybzg · 21/01/2018 13:48

Mine both just used bodyform or always. The teen range wasn't as good.

Absorbant period panties!

Something about them does make me recoil a little bit as an adult (I have no idea what, probably my heavy periods!) but I started my period really early and was mortified by all the pads/liners and found them super uncomfortable. I would have given anything for some absorbant pants at that age, particularly as an alternative to liners. Pads made me feel so self conscious as no one else needed them, I would have loved these.

Id just give a varied selection as you wont know how heavy her periods are going to be and at that age the heaviness can vary significantly. Get her some light teen ones but also include the very big overnight ones. As a preteen i had to use the big overnight ones because all of the others would leak for me. Also include some of the lighter flow tampons. She probably wont want to wear those at this age but its good to get her aware of what they are and how to use them if she does decide she wants to once shes got more used to things.

Thinx!

Passthecake30 · 21/01/2018 13:57

I'd get her bodyform pink pack/always sensitive for normal days and then some thicker/longer ones in case she needs them at some point:

sashh · 21/01/2018 14:16

I started at that age, my mum and I went through Jackie magazine and wrote off for free samples. You can still get free samples for the most popular brands, I'd do that and let her choose.

Candlelights · 21/01/2018 14:35

I'd buy her a range of sizes of pads. DD had couple of very light ones first, and then they got very heavy. So definitely good she's aware that large sanitary towels exist for if that does happen. DD learned to use tampons early on too, once they got heavy which is really useful for holidays and swimming

BlindLemonAlley · 21/01/2018 16:40

Liletts teen range is good and DD also likes Bodyform.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 22/01/2018 22:57

Thanks people. As much as I like the thinx idea, I don’t even spend that much on my underwead and I won’t grow out of it within six months.
I’ve bought a couple of types, avoiding always as scented just makes me think itchy.

Lilets teens. The others seem so big. These were good first year or so for my dd.

Sephi1 · 22/01/2018 23:24

Lillets or liners. Natracare liners are what I buy.

There are now also lots of different cups for teens. Not sure what recommended age for starting with them is.

Stupidwife · 22/01/2018 23:41

Google period starter kits and you can buy packs with different ranges in them

Stupidwife · 22/01/2018 23:43

If you fill out form online you can get a teen starter pack for free from boots

Pinga · 22/01/2018 23:43

Reusable menstrual products (RUMPS)
Really easy to wash - We chuck ours in a bucket of water. Rinse again and then add to normal wash (They are basically clean by the time they end up in the machine)

They come in beautiful prints and colours. Super comfortable.
Try a girls first period pack from Earthwise girls.

Argeles · 23/01/2018 00:01

I started my periods when I was 9.

My Mum bought me thin pads, which were correct for my very heavy flow, but I was petrified that these wouldn’t work and I’d leak everywhere. I made her buy me the towels that are so thick that it’s like sticking a mattress between your legs - and I’d layer 2 of these at nighttime, or when I had P.E. They must’ve made me walk like John Wayne!!!

I then got paranoid that people would be able to see my ‘mattress,’ and I tried Always ultra long, and the Always ultra long nighttime towels. I got over the psychology of them being thin quite quickly, as I could see how effective they were. I still use the same ones now 23 years later.

myrtleWilson · 23/01/2018 00:06

my dd is 14 now but I bought her a couple of starter packs - she now uses lilets tampons and towels at night if she thinks she needs them. I also bought her some diary doll knickers that she wears on heavier days or if she has PE etc...
