Ds1 just got his mock results. They weren't good. Please tell me your positive stories of terrible mocks but successful actual GCSEs!

What's terrible ?

Not GCSE but A level. In my A level economics i got a grade E in my mocks in the February, come May I walked away with an A (before A* existed)

Mock grades can often be at least 1-2 grades below what they get in the real things. If you pr your DC are worried, arrange to speak to school and see what can be put in place (at home and school) to help them achieve their estimated grades.

Me! I got rubbish mocks and it shocked me into working harder and I ended up with all A's and B's. Sometimes it's the kick up the bum that someone needs to take revising seriously. Definitely not too late to turn things around.

He got at least 2 levels below in everything, some were 3 or 4 levels below and in one subject he got 6 levels below his expected grades.
I've spoken to school, emailed school, been in to school, spent hours making a suitable study area with him at home with all his work and revision organised, helped him to make a revision timetable, helped with with revision when necessary. I've tried to be encouraging and supportive.
He wants to go to college, he wants to do A levels. He says all the right things, he stays behind 4 nights a week for extra revision and homework Club. He is capable. He just doesn't seem to be able to apply himself.
I think he thinks he's magically going to get his grades.
I really hope this is the shock he needs.

DS got U in English literature mock ( take a bow ).
That was early January, iirc.
He completely didn't understand how to answer the questions, and dissect the text as required. Basically, hadn't paid proper attention for 2 yrs.

I talked to teacher about what was required. Teacher exasperated at DS. DS didn't much care (always refused to do homework) but could see it was in his interests to TRY to do better in the exam. DS didn't like being embarrassed by a bad mark. We talked thru a few examples & teacher made an effort to direct him more in class. He got an A in real exams 4 months later :).

Around here they only need 55544 to get into college. So can afford to bomb a few. What was his subject 6 below expected?

I cried at ds1 mocks, he passed 4. Went on to pass 12 gcse's but I did become involved with gcse revision and spent many hours testing him with the revision guides. He is now in his third year at uni, doing ok but I still txt nagging reminders to revise at exam time!
