14 year old daughter won't eat breakfast

This is very frustrating. My 14 year old just won't eat breakfast on school days. She gets up early and then spends ages showering, makeup, hair etc, I've talked to her several times about the importance of breakfast and she (I think) sees it as a way of asserting her independence to say she hasn't time. its awful, she was always really good to have breakfast. Does anyone experience the same thing?

I didn't eat breakfast at that age. But I would end up eating my lunch during lessons before lunch! So when lunch came, I was hungry!

In the end my mum would give me that food for lunch and also £1 for a chip butty! (There was a chippy a few minutes away!)

By year 7, I never saw my mum in the morning anyway! I would bike or walk the 1.6 miles! I have an older sister who is nearly 3 years older so she made sure I was up. She wasn't at the same school as me so I still went on my own.

@NorthernSpirit I'm a grown up. I don't need your permission or approval or disapproval on what I say or how I say it Grin Grin Grin

I still really can't stand breakfast and used to hate when my parents made me eat it.

Don't fight over it!

My 15 yr old does not eat breakfast, he just about manages a cup of tea

He eats 2 lunches though(one at first break, and one at lunch time)

Have decided not to battle over it

He has to leave the house at 7:30, and is pretty much still half asleep then

Ohyesiam · 08/01/2018 21:44

I've never been a breakfast fan, it feels like my digestion doesn't " wake up " till late morning. It's never done me any harm.

I disagree that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I don't think any one rule will suit all bodies , and I say this after a life time as a HCP.

midnightmooch · 08/01/2018 23:07

My teens eat breakfast on a school day but the weekend is a little more relaxed and it’s often brunch or straight to lunch.

BuzzKillington · 08/01/2018 23:09

I rarely eat breakfast and one of my teens hasn't eaten it for years.

I can't see a problem.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 08/01/2018 23:10

DD 10 doesn't eat breakfast either. At school she gets hungry about half an hour before lunch. She eats enough over the day, so I don't see a problem.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 08/01/2018 23:12

Get her into yoga and smoothies and all will be well. Yoga is absolutely fantastic for depression and adolescent difficulties.

C0untDucku1a · 08/01/2018 23:13

I never ate breakfast from teenage years to getting pregnant at 32. Ive always been healthy. I have a BA and an MA and ive never been above a size 10.

What are you worried about? Id be more concerned over her anxiety about school.

GrooovyLass · 08/01/2018 23:24

DD stopped eating breakfast when she started high school. She's 18 now and still doesn't.

I also don't eat breakfast at home. I grab something at work at some point - I've usually eaten something by about 11.

By forcing the issue you will turn it into a power struggle and that's how eating disorders can start.

Mummyontherun86 · 08/01/2018 23:36

I never ate breakfast as a teen.., I think you’re over-worrying about this.

Piewraith · 08/01/2018 23:45

Research has shown that those who skip breakfast are more likely to be overweight (as the body is so hungry it will consume more later).

Actually current research has shown that to be a myth.

There's nothing magical about any of the three meals, they are just convenient times and ways for most to eat.

MakeItStopNeville · 08/01/2018 23:46

Neither does my 14 yo dd. It has genuinely never entered my head to worry about that.

PasstheStarmix · 08/01/2018 23:48

I never ate breakfast either so can't really advise... I still don't unless it's later in morning.

HeelsHurt · 08/01/2018 23:49

I can’t remember what age I stopped eating breakfast but pretty young and I still don’t eat until I’ve been up for about two hours . Everyone is different, I wouldn’t push the point that much.

whosaidso · 08/01/2018 23:50

My almost 14 year never rarely has breakfast on a school day.
Making sure the hair and eyebrows are done to perfection trumps a bowl of Frosties every day!!!

midnightmooch · 09/01/2018 08:43

Research has shown that those who skip breakfast are more likely to be overweight (as the body is so hungry it will consume more later). I thought that research was funded by Breakfast cereal companies!

If you are hungry and don't eat breakfast I'm sure your body will continue to demand food and then overeat when you eventually give in but lots of people do not feel hungry in the morning and eat when they do feel hungry rather than at a specified time, isn't that the basis for mindful eating?

SoTotallyOverThis · 09/01/2018 09:06

I thought that research (not funded by big corporations) had in fact shown that people who didn’t eat breakfast were slimmer?

PasstheStarmix · 09/01/2018 09:14

Well I'm not overweight and I don't eat breakfast usually yet know people who have two big thick slices of white toast and butter every morning and they're overweight funnily enough Shock

PasstheStarmix · 09/01/2018 09:16

I know a fitness instructor who doesn't eat breakfast. I feel that 'research' is no longer valid.

Madhairday · 09/01/2018 09:35

My 17 year old DD hasn't eaten breakfast for years, it doesn't seem to be a problem for her. I don't either and use 16:8 fasting as a way of life now - when I do eat breakfast I often feel very faint mid morning and end up eating more, but when I don't I'm not hungry at all and my concentration is far better, and I'm happy to have a balanced lunch and not consume a load of sugar. Works for me. I wouldn't worry OP, I think the 'breakfast like a king' thing was just a way of cereal companies advertising their products and caught on.

mywayalltheway · 09/01/2018 09:39

Both my DC are the same, DS prefers to buy something in his break which is fine but he costs me a fortune whereas DD will just grab some fruit.

NorthernSpirit · 09/01/2018 12:52

@Piewraith - the link you have posted is a clinical study investigating eating breakfast and weight loss. This has nothing to do with my post.

I didn’t say that those who ate breakfast are more likely to loose weight. The research I refer to in my post shows that this who DO NOT eat breakfast are more likely to be overweight.

midnightmooch · 09/01/2018 13:12

Eating breakfast stimulates my appetite and makes me feel hungry and I eat more all day!

And when I was strongly advised to eat breakfast before I took steroids to avoid acid reflux I found the opposite to be true - taking breakfast before steroids gave me acid reflux, if I went without I was fine.
