Christmas for 18 year olds-what are they getting?

DS1 is 18 and in his first year at Uni. Can't help but think Christmas will be a bit different for him this year.

In our family 18 is the cut off for Christmas presents, so he won't be getting anything from the relatives (although his younger brother will!).

He's sent a few ideas through as to what he might like from us. Just wondered if anyone was buying theirs anything exciting/interesting this year. Or are we really just looking at giving them money?

ssd ha ha yes my DS2 was in with me far longer than I would admit to. It was lovely.

ssd · 05/12/2017 19:08

same Blush

I missed him when he moved out and dh moved back

LineysRunner · 05/12/2017 23:27

I'm still not very inspired. DD (21) says just chocolate and hard cash for her various subscriptions to stuff please.

She's gone a bit Tracey Emin.

ssd · 05/12/2017 23:31

ds1 is the same

No 18 year old here, but a 20 and a 17, so pretty close Grin
They're getting DVD box sets - Monty Python, and Fawlty Towers
Fancy schmancy tops - one Ralph Lauren, one Lyle & Scott
Chocolate Brussels sprouts
Jack Wills shower gel (it comes in a squeezy tube and is great for travelling)
Loungewear/pjs - it's cold here and they both like to shower as soon as they get home and change into comfy stuff
Headphones - in-ear sports ones for one, and normal for other...they're always getting lost, or breaking
Books - I can't remember now what, but specific ones they requested
Cinema and Costa gift cards
None of it is very exciting, but I know it'll all be appreciated and used.

We asked out 18 year old for a Christmas list. He replied with the name of a box set of vinyl and a book, and said that was all he really wanted. So now we're stuck what else to get him. Normally he gets concert tickets but we've an overseas move coming up next year so can't chance tickets we might not be here for him to use. I'm considering a dressing gown, Cologne, a beard trimmer and a bit of cash...

ofmenandmice · 06/12/2017 11:53

To add to my list.
Bluetooth speaker like this
Bluetooth headphones, rechargeable.
Manly manicure sets to stop them taking mine

lljkk · 06/12/2017 13:26

DS (now just 18) got a bluetooth speaker Xmas last year that he adores.

16yo DD is getting a waffle iron & lots of toppings (from us). Clothes shop vouchers from other relatives.

I have 18 year old twins ( one at uni, one at drama school).

They're both getting new puffers, trainers, PJs.
Plus lots of expensive (ish - I mean not the very cheapest) cosmetics and toiletries.

DS is also getting a few PS games, the first series of TWD graphic novels, pants, socks. He will stay in college next year ( catered ) so no need for house items. But DD has already signed a contract for next year so is being given lots of pots/pans etc by my Mum.

CautionTape · 08/12/2017 14:21

Oh we've also got them both a Netflix sub.

ofmenandmice · 08/12/2017 14:25

You mean they don't all just log into your netflix?

mrsmuggins53 · 08/12/2017 14:32

Yes mine also uses our Netflix account and makes use of our tv licence.

CautionTape · 08/12/2017 15:48

We've never had Netflix.
We have Sky and Prime, plus go to the cinema a lot.

I think the Netflix subs for DC mean I can access it too. Quite excited Grin.

mumto2teenagers · 10/12/2017 17:06

What about an experience voucher or similar. We are thinking of getting dd a driving experience.

LoveBeingAMum555 · 10/12/2017 23:13

DS1 is 19. He is doing an apprenticeship and struggling with the pay so he will get lots of practical stuff like clothes, nice toiletries, hair stuff, some new headphones plus a few random surprises.

DS2 is 17 and at college. He is getting clothes, books, some new speakers, a football top, new rucksack and again a few surprises.

Both have had £150 spent on them and I know they will appreciate their presents. I am reluctant to give cash because being brutally honest I don't entirely trust them not to waste it (pub in DS1s case). They will get about £50 each from grandparents.

We have said that this is the last year that we are spending this much but we will see!

WaxOnFeckOff · 11/12/2017 11:43

I have 17 and 16 year old DSs. DS1 will be doing Uni next year but may be travelling depending on where he gets offered/decides to go.

We've done a phone upgrade for him with extra data as his main gift together with a new case, some nice more grown up headphones and a new backpack and a powerbank. He is also getting an AMazon echo, Dressing gown Pjs and slippers some bits for his PC - new mousemat/fan/powercube and some cable management clips. Some toiletries - shaver/skin care/shower gels/aftershave. T-shirts, sweeties/crisps. A 3D pen and Beetles lego set.

DS2 is getting a new PC screen and memory instead of the phone and accessories and similar stuff to above but also bits and pieces relating to his favourite band (posters/keyring/hoody)

brizzledrizzle · 23/12/2017 19:11

18 year olds are so hard to buy for aren't they? I've got mine (also 1st year uni student) some books from a list of choices they gave me plus some travel mugs (requested) and also a little one person teapot and cup combination plus some nice chocolates. I'm also adding a voucher for some clothes and a restaurant gift card which they can use at several places like Pizza Express and Nandos.

Maryz · 24/12/2017 00:49

I have just prepared some very artistic IOUs Grin

I think that's better than vouchers. Now to face the lovely shopping days in January [sigh]
