My DD aged 13, on holiday and desperate to go in the pool but started her period first day of hols and will not go in water in case of leakage, point blank refusal so I tentatively suggest tampon but not sure myself if it's too young?? She is not comfortable with idea so I leave it. WWYD??

Not too young at all. Start with something easy, like Tampax compak pearl in a regular or maybe light size. If she's struggling or nervous, stand outside bathroom door and give step by step guidance!

Ps: tell her it's totally normal to be freaked out! And that it might not work the first time. It's completely okay to mess the first few you try up, but only carry on and 'wear' it if you can't actually feel it inside and it feels completely comfy. Most teenagers swimmers and horse riders wear them from an early age just due to the nature of the sport.

My dd has used tampons from her 1st period.
She doesn't like the feel of pads and asked to try them so I got her some and she seems to get on fine with them.
I get the tampax compak ones for her as they are easy for her to use.
It is personal choice though and many of her friends are squeamish about using tampons .

There is no medical or scientific reason why she shouldn't use one.
There used to be warnings on packets against young users, which were at some point revealed to be there simple because the tampax companies thought younger users were more likely to forget to remove a tampon at te correct time and therefore increase their risk of toxic shock.

Any one who has periods of any age who can be trusted to reguarly change theit tampon and not to forget the last tampon in their period is safe to use them.

I used them from first period aged 12.

But one or two of my friends couldn't. I think it was probably due to them having a very strong hymen? No idea really. I did a lot of horse riding as a kid, so probably had no hymen left!

There's no age restrictions on tampons, if she wants to use them why not? Go for small ones and applicators can help.

misshelena · 07/09/2017 18:23

Both dds used tampons since first period, at 11 and 13 respectively. No problem.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 07/09/2017 18:25

I'm prettt sure lillets do a range specifically for teens - that might be a good start. But as the others said, if she's old enough to be menstruating then she's old enough for tampons.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 07/09/2017 18:25

Or how about a moon cup?!

dementedpixie · 07/09/2017 18:27

Of course its not too young. Dd is 13 and used tampons last year and this year on holiday so she could go in the pool. She used the tampax Compaq lites

donajimena · 07/09/2017 18:31

I used them from my first period. I started at 13 but was later than most of my friends who had already started using them and carrying on with life (swimming etc) so I was determined to get the hang of them.
It took a good few attempts though! Ouch Blush

qumquat · 07/09/2017 18:37

I would suggest Lillets as being a lot less liable to leak than Tampax. I found non applicator actually a lot easier to get the hang of than applicator tampons.

Beadieeye · 07/09/2017 18:38

I used them from my first period, didn't think anything of it. Was shocked when my friend told me she wasn't allowed. Turned out her parents had some very funny ideas about their precious daughter not being penetrated by anything 🙄

Crumbs1 · 07/09/2017 18:40

It's too young if they haven't started their periods. Tampax pearls are a comfortable starting place. Explicit guidance from you or an older sibling about finding right hole, positioning for comfort and frequency of changing.
