Acceptable or not...

What would you think if you heard a member of a school staff discussing and reading out the GCSE results of other students to their own son/daughter? The member of staff was reading the information from the school computer results which I assume would be confidential information. Would it bother you?

Were the kids named with their results or were they easily identifiable (like if only 5 kids took Latin GCSE this year). Or was it just "A* B C A D B... " kind of sequence for 30+ lines.

When you go to Parents Eve you can often get a quick glance (upside down reading) at everyone's current achievement/target comparisons. But not enough time to figure out everyone/specifics who got what. So not ideal but not something I'd be bothered about, either.

Completely unacceptable and a data protection breech. I'd be informing the school of my intention to raise it with the ICO after following a formal complaint with the school.

That's so unprofessional! Yes, it would bother me. You have no idea how each child feels about those results so it's up to them to tell or not tell people.

Pleased I'm not alone with my thoughts I think it's disgusting. Sat on it for a couple of days. My DH says it's none of my business but I think it's unacceptable - feel for the students

You really must report it, it's an outrageous breach of confidence.

Does anyone know the procedure for reporting a member of staff at a UK school? Do I just inform the headmaster? And/or governors too?

In dd's school you contact the HT's PA and ask for a copy of their formal complaints procedure. This tends to get the school to sit up and listen and the HT will undoubtedly then contact you himself so as to avoid a formal complaint. I would then give the HT the opportunity to sort outmy complaint informally and to give him credit he has. If I was dissatisfied I'd follow the complaints procedure though.

Why were they doing that? Very odd behaviour.

As a aside, when I was at school (early 90s) exam results were still posted publicly on a massive board and you could see everyone's if you wanted to. How times change!
