Hi

Can I ask any of you with teens with a weekend/part time job how much they earn an hour or a daily rate etc.

DD wants a job to earn some extra spends but wanted to know if she would earn much or whether to pay her myself to do more chores at home.

She'd get more benefit from the outside job other than just the cash (confidence, dealing with people, routine and responsibility), so ideally I'd get her to do that. The reality of a getting job as a14 year old might be a different matter.

I have older teens but neither work - yet! lazy articles!

Ds16 £7 hr Lifeguard did cost us £195 for his course, he's got two casual positions picking up quite a few hours in the school holidays.

Yeh I was also thinking that about the experience side of things wax, think was a bit concerned about being used too much for cheap labour sort of thing.

£7 is good rainbow not much less than minimum wages isn't it.

You could at it that way and no doubt there will be some unscrupulous employers who intend to exploit cheap labour, however, even then they will be getting experience and knowledge and finding out about poor employers so in the vast majority of cases it's good for them.

I did all sorts of jobs when I was a teenager as did DH and all our siblings. I gained something from them all even if it was just exercise from being out delivering leaflets :o

There is no minimum wage for those under the age of 16.

under 18 and over 16, the minimum wage is £4.05.

dd (15) gets £5 an hour working 4 hours on a Saturday in a shop. This was useful to read - www.reed.co.uk/career-advice/jobs-for-15-year-olds/

Wholivesinashoe · 28/07/2017 16:59

DD14 gets £6.50 an hour working 20 hours a week in a shop. (Summer job)

Angelicinnocent · 28/07/2017 20:15

I employ a 15 year old involved in animal care. She gets 25 per day but it depends on what is going on as to how many hours she works. Sometimes she might do 2 hours for 25 but others she might do 7 hours for it. It works for her and us though.

mywayalltheway · 28/07/2017 20:53

Just been talking to a friend of a friend and mentioned her wanting some work and they have said she could wash pots in their cafe for £4 per hour.

somewhereovertherain · 28/07/2017 20:55

Dd 15 gets 6 per hour. Dd 16, gets 7 at a local cafe plus bonus.

Their friends seem to vary from £4 up. They've all worked since 13-14

somewhereovertherain · 28/07/2017 20:58

Would agree with the poster it's much more benefit to the DDs than just the money.

Confidence, number skills, cooking and washing skills all improved.

The ability to do things they want also a real benefit and they can value how hard they worked before buying things.

mywayalltheway · 28/07/2017 23:56

I think she is going to take up the offer of £4 per hour to wash pots.

DS 16 gets £4 ph in a department store.

BackforGood · 29/07/2017 00:59

£4 an hour is the 16 - 18 rate.
There is no 'NMW' for U 16s.
Not that many people will employ U16s as there are too many work regulations they have to comply with, and it's just easier for them to employ over 16s.
However, dc themselves benefit so much more from working outside the home, from having to work alongside other people, to time keeping, traveling, and sometimes putting up with Joe Public.

Agree with Rainbow though - if they have skills / qualifications once they get to 18, then something like lifeguarding (mine get £8ph) or refereeing (£25 + per match) is worth investigating.

somewhereovertherain · 29/07/2017 07:52

Have to say round here loads of people employ under 16s more jobs than kids. All seem to treat them well. Lots of cafes and girls though.

I think pretty much every one in both DDs years work.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 29/07/2017 18:45

16 year old DD gets £4.05 in the local chippy. She's been doing it a year. Doesn't sound a lot but it mounts up and the owner has been very fair paying her holiday money etc and giving time off during GCSEs

LucyTheLocalBike · 29/07/2017 19:59

We live in a busy holiday area so summer jobs are relatively easy to come by. DD (15) has just gone from £5 p/h to £7.50 p/h plus any food thats left over at night - she works on a holiday park chippy
