Ds awful in mornings.....

My 12 year old ds is awful at getting ready in the mornings. He gets picked up by a friend who then has to get to work so he needs to be ready but he's late everyday. If we push him to get ready he explodes and melts down. He's had issues at school and finds it stressful (being screened for autism). We've tried leaving him to it, shouting, explaining consequences of him being late, banning from x box, nothing works. The mornings are made so stressful by his behaviour and the atmosphere in the house is horrible. I'm now considering telling him if he misses lift he'll have to make his own way in which worries me as it means him cycling 3 miles in his own. Any ideas?

Help him sort his bag every night. Lay his uniform out ready for the morning then set and alarm and get up early and help him with everything so he is done. Maybe have toast for breakfast so he can take it if he's running late.

Is the cycle route a safe one?

This is incredibly common with autism, or children who have autistic tendencies, and shouting at your son and increasing the stress is, I am afraid, diametrically the wrong way to deal with it. You need a calm morning, so as people suggest, you need to have everything laid out ready, and wake him up early to give him time. You could also contact the National Autistic Society for further suggestions.

Thanks for the replies. I've done all of the above. He is showers the night before, I lay his uniform out and tell him to get bag ready the night before. I try to stay calm but the slightest thing makes him explode. He's very rude. And I think yes because of his autism I need to make some allowances but I can't let him behave however he likes and speak to everyone like dirt, and push his little sister around. 😢
