Daughter being sick. Had GCSE exam tomorrow morning

Daughter woke up this morning. Said she was feeling overly hot and dizzy. Put it down to the extreme heat. However, she is now vomiting and can't even keep water down.

She has a GCSE exam tomorrow morning. What happens if she is still being sick regularly? Can she go but be allowed to dash out if need be? Normally you can leave with a teacher to go to the loo by putting your hand up and waiting. But obviously with vomiting you often have to dash.....

Could a dr's note be arranged at short notice - this may allow for rest breaks that don't deduct from the time allocated for her exam

They may also be able to move her to a smaller room so she can dash out if it is still this bad in the morning... what time is her exam tomorrow?

We had this at the beginning of exams in mid May. Poor dd was very ill the day before an exam. Our doctor said they didn't offer a sick note. School were very sympathetic.Dd was offered a seat at the back of the hall and permission to leave urgently if necessary - the invigilators were warned and kept a close eye on dd. . The school also added a note to her exam paper to say she was poorly while sitting the exam. She made it through, leaving the hall once, and came home immediately after the exam had finished.

I hope your dd feels better soon.

My drs phones open at 8am but often it takes 20-30 mins to get through especially on a Monday. She said she had to be at school for 8.45 so presuming a 9am start. Will contact school in the morning if she's still being sick and see what they suggest.

Contact school and speak to the exams officer 1st thing. They may be able to offer either seat by door in room near a toilet, or a room on her own with a sick bucket depending on how many invigilators they have available. And put in rest breaks if required. They can also apply for special consideration if she's still poorly tomorrow, though it's only worth 1 or 2%, but every little helps.

Speak to them as early as you can as they will have to juggle things about to accommodate her, but they will try their best.

They should be able to put her in a separate room and allow breaks but you will need a dr note. Tbh if she is still unwell call school first thing and be at gp for surgery opening. She could start up to half an hour later if needs be , depending on length of exam.

Bobbybobbins · 18/06/2017 15:34

As pps have said, she should be offered rest breaks and a separate room and exam board can be contacted if the doctor will provide a note. This is what we do at our school. Hope she feels better soon and good luck tomorrow Flowers

Yep she sits exam with a bucket beside her I'm afraid.... better for the other candidates if she's in a small room with just an invigilator, but I have know a sports hall full with one poor child puking quietly in a corner and one poor invigilator emptying the bowl before the stench permeated the hall....

Hope the exam went ok for her @nerfqueen

@happinessbythekilowatt . Thanks for asking.

Daughter was still being sick this morning. I tried ringing the school at 7.30 but phone lines didn't open till 8. They said they would get a member of the exam team to ring me back. By 8.25 they hadn't phoned so we went to the school, daughter was anxious about what would happen if she missed it. An invigolator came to see us. They put my daughter in the ICT suite (Where students who need to use computers for their exams were). The room had air con, they gave her an ice cold bottle of water and a sick bag. She had permission to leave if necessary. And she was allowed to leave when she was done. It was a 90 min exam.

So proud she made the effort to go in. She's still not right but only 1 exam to go on Wednesday and hopefully she will be better by then.

Glad they gave her a separate room etc @nerfqueen

Hope she's better by Wednesday, anyone I know who has been ill like this during exams, GCSE or others has always achieved predicted grade Smile
