DD's heavy period and school trip

My DD started her period 4 months ago and it's been really heavy each time, with leaks at night. She's going on a school trip in 2 wks and her period is due while away. She's terrified of having a leak on her sheets and she's getting anxious. Any tips?

Tampons would be great but she didn't feel ready to try one yet. I remember being quite scared of trying them for the first time too so I'm not pressuring her, but have told her that they are a game changer!

I just googled diary doll as well. They look good. X

Thinx pants.

They work. I have heavy periods (having to change a super tampon + maxi pad every hour) and since using Thinx pants, I've not had a single overnight leak, and no more having to wake 2-3 times a night to change pads/tampons.

Will GP give norethisterone for 13yo? I'm going to make an appointment but just wondering if it's a waste of time given the online advice. This trip involves long travel on a coach and long days out. I'm really worried about daytime now as well as nights. It would be great if she just didn't have a period!

I've just taken a load of 14 year olds on an activity trip, and two of them had norethisterone to delay their period. One tablet in the morning, and they were sorted.

Take her to the GP and ask. I'm sure they will prescribe it for her.

Thanks. That was my other issue-i read it was to be taken 3 times per day and I thought my DD would probably forget but if it can be taken one a day that would be better! X

What about sleeping on a disposable baby changing mat? Very thin but does the job so much better than a towel. Also Diary Doll pants for sure.

I worked at an American summer camp, and all the girls there would use tampons so they could do the sports more easily. This is from about 10/11 upwards. Is there time beforehand to get used to them?

Zoflorabore · 02/06/2017 07:52

I've just used norethisterone until a few days ago as my period was due when I was away in Turkey, 3 tablets a day to start a few days before period due and stop taking when you get home and period came the next day.
The tablets are tiny and really do work.

At her age, I wore cycling shorts under my PJs. They stopped the pad from shifting at night and made everything feel a bit more secure.

How about Huggies Dry Night bed sheets? They're advertised for children who are not yet dry at night, but once out of the packaging they're just white adhesive absorbent sheets.
As they're adhesive they can stick to the sheet, not move around and be disposed of each morning.

Tranexamic acid might be better, it's not hormonal and it really slows down the blood flow.

AlpacaLypse · 03/06/2017 14:26

GP prescribed Norethisterone for both dds when needed, age 13. Did the biz, happy holiday!

Falconhoof1 · 03/06/2017 21:30

Thanks for that added info on the tablets. I'll see GP next week and hopefully get the medication needed. Otherwise some great suggestions so thank you all.

I did not get on well with norethisterone but then I don't do well with the pill either.

I'm sure there is medication to help with heavy bleeding available.

I called gp today and he told me over the phone that they will give her tablets. They need to see her first but shouldn't be a problem. Appointment on Thursday. Thanks for all your input! Xxx

Get her some period pants. Got mine on Amazon, can remember the brand, but it was really easy to research. Makes pads last at least twice as long.
