"I'm not gonna lie"

DD (14) says this all the time in the middle of various sentences. Is it the latest teenage vernacular or just DD and her friends or possibly just DD? It gives me the rage (inwardly)Angry. I have commented on it and she's stopped saying it quite so much but that could be because she's on school holidays at the moment. Anyone else's teens say this?

isnt it a Welsh thing?
One of the kids friends texted me the other day with 'I'm not gonna lie' -
had no idea it had gone international,,,

Dollyparton3 · 20/04/2017 13:08

Do it Davros! The best one was when I was pointing out that she had broken a promise on something and therefore told a lie. That led to:-

Teen: NGL, I don't want to talk to you anymore
Me: so your NGL now? or you weren't GL then but changed your mind?
Teen: no, I just don't wanna talk about it
me: so when you say you're NGL does that mean that you didnt mean to lie or does that mean we can only talk about it if you put NGL on the text first?

I could have gone on for hours...

Davros · 20/04/2017 18:35

NGL, I'll do it!

My daughter used to start every sentence with "basically" and now whatever she says starts with "get this"
I found myself saying "Get this..." at work the other day.

ByeByeBadman · 20/04/2017 19:01

NGL Grin
I turned round and said. Then he turned round and said drives me mad.

I have been known to comment on what a lot of spinning is going on.

fruityb · 20/04/2017 19:17

Everyone spends a lot of time turning round! And how everyone says "oh" when relaying a story.

"So they turned round and said "oh, well if you're going to do that." So I turned round and said "oh well if that's how you feel..."

Onlygingergothinthevillage · 20/04/2017 19:19

'Not going to lie' is Nessa from Gavin & Stacy. My teens use 'random'a lot. 'I swear down' gives me the rageAngry

Davros · 20/04/2017 23:20

We've never watched Gavin and Stacy but it's filtered down to me somehow via DD! I put "NGL dinner is ready" in a text to her earlier as she had her head stuck in some homemade facial steaming bowl!

Mine says 'legit' a lot.
It legit is! I believe its an abbreviation of legitimate (ly) and means something is true Grin
Utter twonk.

tigerdriverII · 21/04/2017 05:11

Mine too! I'm tempted to say : Why would you be lying, poppet? But that would induce teenrage.

We still like get a lot of, like, likes : which always make me ask whether he's looking for, say, a jumper or something like a jumper.

After years of correcting him (and everyone else) I was literally mortified when the OED finally caved on the definition of "literally "Grin

Davros · 21/04/2017 08:57

I'm with you on literally and I love the term "teenrage"

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 21/04/2017 09:03

Mine calls everyone 'bruv', including me. Swears blind it's not short for brother. Gives me the rage but I suspect that's part of the appeal for her.

MimsyBorogroves · 21/04/2017 09:17

Kids at school bottle flipping, managing to get it upright: "it landed!"

I pointed out it would have landed no matter which way it ended up on the floor because, like, gravity. Grin

MimsyBorogroves · 21/04/2017 09:18

Oh, and "time" meaning "ages".

"I haven't seen you for TIME".

Stop talking to me.

Justonemorecupoftea · 21/04/2017 09:24

'To be fair'. In most sentences, even when he isn't being fair. I'm almost glad he hardly speaks as most of what he utters is drivel. I'm so bloody old Sad

MaybeTimeNow · 21/04/2017 09:25

Davros Not gonna lie, you need to stop being so salty fam.

Dsis speaks a whole new language now, I've found trying to speak it back to her means she stops.

NiktheGreek · 21/04/2017 09:26

Actually. Drives me mad as in "nan is coming for dinner" " is she actually?"

danTDM · 21/04/2017 09:30

'turn down for what'

What?GrinHmm

MumBod · 21/04/2017 09:33

Not gonna lie definitely a thing in our house.

As is, 'Can you not?'

As in "Aww, DS2, give us a cuddle"

"Eewww, mum, can you not?"

CrazedZombie · 21/04/2017 09:38

Fam, blud, peak, sick, safe g... so many phrases that make my teeth itch.

I get revenge by using teenage slang myself. My dd's friends are impressed that I can use emoji correctly and look startled when I say that people were using emoji in the 90s long before they were alive.

CabernetSauvignyoni · 21/04/2017 09:43

This is still a thing?! I'm 26 and my year group were saying this a decade ago! and possibly still doBlush

Maybe I need to make my way to the Down With The Kids thread after all Grin

CrazedZombie · 21/04/2017 09:50

Just remembered that my kids say "I ain't gonna lie" with friends. They wouldn't say it to me because the ain't but not good. 😖

Davros · 21/04/2017 10:54

Seems I've got off lightly bruv Grin
I'm not against slang and go out of my way to ensure DD has an extensive vocabulary of London slang but I think it's the attached pretendy ghetto accent which, to be fair, she like doesn't do. One of her friends is gay and wants everything to be "bougie"! I asked her if he knows polari but, not gonna lie, I think I'll have to teach him that!

OP posts:
ems137 · 21/04/2017 14:42

I am finding "legit" really annoying at the moment.

LilacMarin19 · 28/04/2017 02:38

I'm a mum and even I use "I'm not gonna lie" and "I swear down". I'm only 21 and I guess I just never grew out of it! I didn'the even realise until now. I probably still speak like my 17 year old self.
