My 16yr DS told me this week he has a girlfriend. His first that I know about anyway. They have been friends for a while but now I guess things have moved on. I am really unsettled with it though and a bit freaked that he is moving into the adult world and adult consequences too. Advise please! Should I just keep my nose out (I feel I should)? If your kids have been there before, would you say there are any do's or dont's?

Agree with all of the above. Welcome her into your home and treat her pretty much as you would a male friend except for thinking about sleeping arrangements if she does stay over. As for condoms, they are expensive and I would rather they were readily available in our bathroom cabinet if they are needed but I don't make a fuss about it.

I was a bit surprised at how intense these teen relationships are. My DS is only 16 but talks as if they will be together for the rest of their lives. I just go along with it and I have to say that so far he has been more settled, calmer and happier than when he didn't have a girlfriend!

I too have found my dds first teenage relationship to be very intense and then talking about being together for a long time. What are other people's experience of how this plays out - do they eventually drift apart and how difficult is it to get through?

Bump

My two are far too young at the moment but personal experience states that the teenage heart is a fickle thing so I wouldn't worry too much...even if she has tattoos and facial piercings!

So you mean they can feel intensely and then just drift apart? It's so long since I was a teenager.

Most adults struggle to maintain stable long term relationships (ok most men!).So I wouldn't buy names cards for Christmas dinner yet... maybe plan an extra place but not namedSmile

More worried about feelings being hurt when they do split -

The occasional pride wounding is just part of growing up so I wouldn't worry on that account.
