So theres this new rule at my oldest's high school and its that even when its hot they arent allowed to take off their blazers- is this even allowed. Its not like many of them are wearing jumpers and can take them off but ive been there at parents evening and those buildings are way too hot anyway nevermind adding this rule. Who else thinks this rule is ridiculous?

Our secondary has this rule. The reason is that if the pupils are wearing them they are not leaving them somewhere and losing them (and was brought in because of parental complaints)

It works well. Teachers are trusted to exercise common sense about whether to lag pupils take them off during lessons, then they all move around with them in between classes.

I work in a secondary school and they have to wear blazer moving round school but can take off in lessons. I try to encourage them to take them off because there is a lot of BO otherwise - however they mostly prefer to keep either a jumper or blazer on. All girls, so no boys to see them either.

Our son's school have a blazers-on policy, but on the very few hot summer days, they do issue an exemption at the morning assembly/form session to allow blazers to be carried that day instead.

Carrying isn't a problem because the kids are used to carrying their coats around anyway. The school has no coat rooms nor lockers and is spread over several buildings on different sites, meaning most wear their coats to walk between lessons anyway. So on most days, it's coats on the chair backs, and on the few hot summer days, it's blazers on the chair backs!

Usually individual teachers can give permission to remove them in their classroom.

they simply would never wear them

The horror!Grin

It's a stupid rule, unfortunately it seems very common.

My dc's school has similar rules which seem to be designed for mindless compliance rather than for any constructive reasons.

They had the same rule at my school, they used to patrol the streets checking we hadn't taken them off on the walk home as we were "representing the school". It was so hot in summer, thankfully there were a lot of ginnels/snickets for us to walk in..

The main reason for strict uniform is so that if they are rebelling against silly uniform rules, they are less likely to go on to worse things. It may seem OTT but it does generally work. If students are smartly dressed they usually have more pride in their appearance, and it does help behaviour. Schools where kids wear what they like & are scruffy aren't usually the top performing ones in terms of grades. Parents generally aspire to send their children to schools where students are smartly presented and grades are good.
