£600 iPhone dilemma

Is it crazy to even contemplate allowing my 15yr old to buy an iPhone with money she has saved from Birthdays and Christmas? It's all she wants... and she says most teens have them! But it just seems like so much money to me...!

I wouldn't let DD dip into her regular savings account for a phone but her general one that birthday money, Christmas money etc I don't see that as my money to have a say in. I think it's a bit of a disincentive to save hard for something only to be told actually no, you are not buying that. I only intervened once when DS1 wanted to buy an 18 game.
Personally I won't spend that on a phone I can think of way better things to buy but that shouldn't affect DD's money.

Thanks notso. I'm still undecided, but have a more rounded view about what may or may not be reasonable behaviour. DD is surely destined to be a politician or something as she has a way of coming up with a very good argument for her point of view. We'll sort it out once we've moved house. She may well have moved on to the next thing then!
gandalf Spending £600 on something she really wants, rather than spending the same amount over a period of time on nonsense may be better IMHO. The money is being spent either way.
swing It's not a desperate need for the newer model. She just has an ancient Nokia ATM, not a smart phone. She just loves good technology and it would be her first proper iPhone that she can get apps on. We share an ancient iPhone 4 but it's so old it's incompatible with most apps.
As for relatives. I do have a problem with money being given 'conditionally'. I would far rather her buy something she wants, rather than be given 'more suitable' things that relatives have chosen, that lie unopened and unused.

You can get £40 a month deals if that helps the decision!

Or £35 a month for 3gb with £75 up front?

PickAChew · 05/02/2017 22:46

3GB will barely cover it if she uses a phone for streaming video and sending endless photos.

I have a £200 phone which runs all the apps i want very comfortably.

And, like others, I drop it constantly! It's on its 3rd toughened glass screen protector in 6 months!
