So....am I mean.....according to her I am the meanest parent ever.....
We've been to a friends party. No restrictions on phone usage all night - since 8pm. She can do whatever she wants etc etc. Now we're home, it's 12.52am and she wants her phone but I'm enforcing normal rules of phones on charge at the top of the stairs before bedtime. Apparently this makes me the worst mum EVER. She is sobbing in bed. Like a terrible trauma had befallen her.

Am I? Am I the worst mum ever. Am I being unreasonable? Or is almost 1am an ok time to stop phone usage?

I am with you OP. DD has to leave her phone on charge downstairs overnight. In fact I've insisted on no screens for a half hour before bedtime or I will turn the wifi off. I have also been told that I'm mean but I am the parent and if being mean means that she gets a nights sleep and a break from the constant bombardment of social media then so be it.

You're not a mean mom, you're a good mom.

I'm more laid back now my DD is nearly 16 but when younger she would often try and sneak it back when I was asleep - I put it next to my bed and I woke up one night to find her on the floor crawling around the bed...
The alarm argument was quashed by buying her a £5 alarm clock ...
I bought a cash box with a combination lock - cost about £10. At night or for certain other misdemeanour's the phone went 'in the box' - she still gets threatened with that sometimes. I let her try and work out the code for ages but she never managed it ... ) It is one of the most useful things I have every bought - one with a key wouldn't be so good as they could always find it.
And it is still in use - I use it to keep things out of her reach - so I currently have jellies in there - she eats them out the packet - I got fed up with going to cupboard to find empty packets when I'd promised DD2 a jelly and ice cream treat ...and disclosing tablets (stain everything!) ...and floss (she chews everything - has ADHD - and will pull it all out and chew it ...Confused
For everyone saying they charge phones overnight - you really shouldn't - they are a fire risk - even more worrying if they are left on the landing/in the hall where they could potentially block your exit.
