If your 16 yr old has a part time job how much do they earn?

DD (16) has just got her first part time job, in retail. All good so far. It's minimum wage so £4/h. She's working for a chain but not a big one. She has friends working for Boots/Debenhams etc. who say they are getting at least £6 or £7/h. Do most employers pay 16 year olds more than £4/h?

My 14 year old gets paid more than £4 an hour Hmm My 16 year old get £5.80 an hour and that's on an apprenticeship. And my older ones, 18 and 19 now, were on more than £4 when they were 16 too.

I guess it depends on where you are though.

My 17 yr old gets £8 an hour in a large retail company in London...in April it's going up to £10

Thanks for replying. Wow, so, her friends were likely to be telling the truth. I think I will encourage her to look elsewhere after Christmas.

£4 in the NMW for U18s.

My 16 year old DSD works in Sports Direct PT and I think she gets about £5 ph.

£6.40 per hour in catering which seems to be above average around here.

They get paid more for special events where they waitress rather than serve food.

When ds worked in retail as a 16 yr old, he was on NMW for U18s - at the time £3.79 I think.
First job wasn't so bad as he worked 10 hrs across the week in a small local shop that he walked to (was inbetween school and home, so ideal)
2nd job though was in the City Centre, so he ended up having to pay £5.50 return to get there and back on the train, and they continually gave him 4 hour shifts - so he was taking up about 6 hours from his day, to walk away with less than £10 Sad

However, other retailers can be a lot fairer / more sensible and then have far fewer staff leave over the course of a year.

dd did her lifeguard qualification when she was 16 though, and has been earning something like £7.80 an hour for her job since then.

DD gets £4.50 an hour, I wish she would work somewhere else but she quite likes the work and oth, she has a job!

Dd, 17, gets paid £6 ph. No extra for bank holidays etc tho. She did have a £4 an hour job where she only worked 2 hr shifts - hardly seemed the effort of getting there!

My DS doesn't have a steady part time job but he earns £5 an hour for babysitting on an ad hoc basis.

Wow Bertrand what does your teen do to earn that sort of money? and are there any jobs going for me? Xmas Grin

Mine earns £5.50ph in a small cost cutter type store. He also earns £5-7ph babysitting depending on which family it is.

He was really pleased with £5.50ph in the shop. He is still 15 but 16 in next few weeks.

In theory, yes Scottish - but there are more restrictions on the amount of hours they are allowed to work, and the times they can work, so most retailers don't think it's worth the hassle and will only employ those over 16, when restrictions are less, but they are cheaper than 18 yr olds.

My 16 year old work in a kitchen in a restaurant and earn £6 an hour and also has a share of the tips. Average for this age is anything between £5 and £7

What would you say is the best way for a 16 year old to look for a part-time job (we're in London). Going into the shops/restaurants/fast-food joints personally or emailing?

Going in, in person - but it's just luck that they might happen to have any work at that time. The best way is to tell everyone you know that she is looking - people are generally always more keen to employ someone they 'sort of know' (even if they don't really, but the dd of a friend or colleague seems a connection).
Where I am, a lot of casual jobs (waiting in pubs, supermarkets, etc) just put a shout out on local Facebook sites - the local community one is always saying 'M&S are hiring' or 'Anyone looking for bar work?' etc.

Dd is 16 and waitressing. She has been told £3.80 an hour but a she I now see NMW for 16 is £4 I will Ben chasing that up if it's not that.
She isn't looking for a different work as that wage and the conditions are a piss take.

My 16yo works for Deliveroo and gets £4 or £4.50 a delivery, so the pay-per-hour can be quite good or quite bad, depending on how busy it is/how fast she is/how far the delivery is.

Deliveroo is in the news for being exploiitative, but I don't think it hurts a 16yo to find out that low skilled work can be a bit rubbish - might make her see the importance of qualifications for jobs with better conditions.

Unfortunately the NMW doesn't come into force until after the last Friday in June of year 11.
