Child maintenance after age 18

Eldest DC turns 18 next year. Not sure yet whether they will be going to uni or doing an apprenticeship, but either way they will continue to need financial support for a few more years. Exh has reliably paid CM but refuses to have any contact with me other than via text re contact arrangements, so I can't have a sensible conversation with him about it. What is reasonable to expect from the non resident parent in financial terms once DC are 18?

Dolly so the dsd has a bedroom for three months of the year!
Incidentally the housing benefit tax doesn't apply if a child is at uni for this very reason.

I appreciate that, but the father of the uni student has to pay for a room for her regardless of if she lives with him or not, why does he have to chip in towards his ex's housing costs when the child reaches 18?

I appreciate that it's nice for the mum to keep her bedroom nice and empty for her, but that's her choice. The dad's responsibility is to support the young adult where they live in term time.
