Some schools do 14 GCSES as a matter of course (comes from the days when the government used total points in League Bloody Tables). I agree it is unnecessary, although there are definitely teens who can ace every one, and more.
I know (from DD) that it is quite hard for some teens to drop subjects once they have started them - hence continuing with that many.

However, less is more for most teens - up to 10 max is surely enough?

Gin, it sounds like your DS's school have lost the plot!

Elizawh · 25/08/2016 18:25

Looks like there's 2 schools like that then. Shock we don't live in Essex!

AnyFucker · 25/08/2016 18:31

My ds got six B's (better than expected) and one C (maths, massively hoped for) and 2 D's (expected)

So proud of him. He got his first choice college for A levels too.

After a very rocky GCSE life stage (mental health problems, some serious adult shit to deal with, involvement of lots of services etc) he made it through

I cannot say how chuffed I am.

bigTillyMint · 25/08/2016 20:21

Well done to your DS, AF. And to you supporting him Flowers

jailbirdstar · 25/08/2016 20:25

My daughter got 3A*s, 2Bs, and 6A's (along with two other A's for short courses done over the last two years). We are over the moon pleased but she's disappointed with the B's!!! Doesn't help that none of her friends at her school have had anything less than A's, but hopefully she'll wake up tomorrow super pleased with her results and the fact that all but one of her GCSE subjects on her A level list are behind her. She's doing two brand new subjects, along with Music (and a flute Diploma) for her A-levels, so I'm hoping she'll get over the B's... frankly if I'd got B's I would have been dancing a jig all around town!

PeaceOfWildThings · 25/08/2016 20:28

DD got 6 A*s, 3 As and a couple of Cs. She spent nearly 5 months of year 11 in hospital, and they didn't teach the 2 subjects she got Cs in (her worst area anyway) otherwise, she might have got Bs, but we don't care.

It's a bit if a shame about those odd Biology questions, which meant she got an A, not an A*.

NicknameUsed · 25/08/2016 20:35

Wow! Well done to your daughter Peace I hope she is OK now.

exWifebeginsat40 · 25/08/2016 20:43

DD got an A, 4 Bs, and a C (along with a D and a Level 1 pass but never mind) and can do her chosen A levels. she also had a tough time throughout her studies, and her anxiety has been bad. i couldn't be prouder of her.

my DP's son also got what he needed - we took them for a cheeky Nandos to celebrate. a good day all round!

Mummydummy · 25/08/2016 21:00

I understand the disappointment if you feel they've not reached their potential. It all relative. My daughter got an A* in Art (which is her passion - she wants to go to art school), an A, 5 Bs and a C. Its exactly what I expected/hoped. She had a very tough time in primary feeling very stupid so its a huge achievement.

But she goes to a very high achieving school and I felt for her as she saw friends celebrate lots of As and As and I had a little thought maybe if I'd helped her more she'd have a few more As. But I chased the idea away - she's got what she needs for 6th form and she's a A person in every way.
She's now off at Reading festival celebrating with her friends. As she deserves. But I do understand how parents feel - they so want the best for their kids and want them to feel a success.

TheLaundryLady · 25/08/2016 21:08

Well done to your DS AF..
My DD has been dealing with mental health issues over the last 12 months which at time has made even attending school a huge challenge for her too

AnyFucker · 25/08/2016 21:24

Thanks, TLL

I hope your daughter comes out the other side too x

PumpkinPie9 · 25/08/2016 21:24

They watched utube style videos to teach them maths

I think there's a shortage of maths teachers at the moment so they might not have been able to find anyone to do more than show maths youtube videos. It's a sad state of affairs

Ginmakestheworldeasiertolivein · 25/08/2016 21:39

Yep,the school have lost the plot and they're too arrogant to say they got it wrong. His friends who were on par a jnr school and went to what was considered an under performing school have all got As! I know hand on heart, he wound have achieved more at a different school with old school teaching and discipline! It's scary there's 2 similar schools!! Shock

corythatwas · 25/08/2016 23:57

Well done to all your dc!

Ds got 6 B's/C's: enough to get into Sixth Form of his choice, though he will have to redo the maths once he gets there. Very relieved and think this will be a real turning point for him. He did have a bit of a rocky start and has some catching up to do, but he has also matured a lot in the last year; he just needs a new place to make a fresh start.

PeaceOfWildThings · 26/08/2016 16:32

Well done, everyone! Is there a link to a thread for parants of children going on to do A levwls?

(While I'm at it, is there also one for A levwl students jyst about to start university?)

MrsPatrickDempsey · 26/08/2016 20:49

Gin - the head at Honywood posted on FB yesterday about this year being the first year of results for the iPad students and how it was the highest achieving year ever. My DS is going into yr 6 and we are split catchment for Honywood and a school in Colchester so I am following with interest.

Lynnm63 · 26/08/2016 22:43

DS got 1A, 3B's, 5 C's and a D. He has been accepted for sixth form at his chosen school. I'm proud and relieved even though he was capable of more A's. I was more worried than him having spent months nagging him to revise! Head of year said Mums are always more worried than their DC's
Hopefully with just the subjects he loves at A level he will do even better in two years time.
Congratulations to everyone else's dc's.

BG2015 · 27/08/2016 21:39

My son got one A and 5 C's.

He's going on to college to do a computer course. Pleased as he doesn't find studying/exams easy.

HormonalHeap · 28/08/2016 23:29

My ds got 2A's, 7B's and a C. Ok nationally I suppose but not enough to keep him in his school for 6th form. (School had 73% A* in all exams taken).

Always praise effort not achievement but he gamed his way right through exams (only working with tutors) often till 1am night before exams. If he does the same at college next year they won't even let him sit the exams.

PumpkinPie9 · 29/08/2016 01:19

What marks did he need to get and what type of school was it?

HormonalHeap · 29/08/2016 13:57

Needed majority of A's, selective independent school. No genius but had he worked he would have got them. If he's learned his lesson that's fine by me, but I'm not convinced. I don't think that many kids have a clear idea at this stage of what they want to do, but for those who do, having an aim must help with focus.
