Hi all, I'm not quite sure where to post this but I am looking for suggestions for some musical theatre songs for my DD to learn, she is 14 years old and a soprano. She's previously enjoyed singing Whistle Down the Wind and Memory, but she would like a new song to sing for a local music festival next month. Any suggestions?

Balletgirl

Please don't say that, although it's a struggle finding suitable lyrics, dd teacher is skipping grade 6 and going for 7 at Christmas.
It has taken her a year to consolidate grade 6, she took grade 5 last July and got a good distinction.
She does have a reduced repertoire and fewer choices than older people would have but she is managing well, and not the normal 3 from each list, although some lists are obviously more manageable.

I think mt is different though, my dd couldn't do acting and American accents.
She can't do wispy songs neither (techie word needed there) Grin
She's more Julie Andrews crisp? clear? dunno what I mean Grin

It Might As Well Be Spring from State Fair? Basically teenage angst Grin (Although I'm not sure quite how high it's set.)

Actually remembering further - after grade 5 ABRSM split into 2 syllabi. voice which had the age restrictions & was meant for the more serious classical/opera student & included vocalise like vaccai & singing which had a wider choice of songs & I don't think had the same age restrictions.

That was in the early 90's - not sure when it changed.

Or what about the title song from Thoroughly Modern Millie?

I suppose it depends if you want a novelty song or not...

'What it means to be a friend' from the musical '13'.

hellocleveland · 02/05/2016 00:58

'If only you would listen' from the new 'School of Rock' musical.

Ooh thank you, I agree totally with some songs being too mature for her and I have vetoed some of her past choices for that exact reason, at the moment she's interested in On My Own, Don't Rain on My Parade, Good Morning Baltimore and something else which I have forgotten Grin but I've passed all of these on to her to look at

what about Burn from Hamilton or is that a bit old?

I Don't Know How To Love Him from Jesus Christ Superstar
My Bill from Showboat
Green Finch and Linnet Bird from Sweeney Todd (quite hard, though)
I Feel Pretty from West Side Story
I Got Rhythm from Crazy For You

My Dd did 'When she loved me' from Toy Story 2, as well as 'The sound of music' and 'The Pipes of Pan' from The Arcadians.

I would stay away from the more 'adult' songs as adjudicators are generally a traditional bunch and prefer age-appropriate songs. 'Greenfinch and Linnet Bird' would be a very poor choice as it's a very dark song with undertones of madness, as well as being very difficult to sing well.

Maybe look at some of the songs from the ABRSM grade 5 syllabus?
