How do I buy clothes for ds age 13...!?

Ds has informed me he dislikes his wardrobe as too babyish and uncool.

However will not enlighten me as to what he will wear. Has rejected all requests to go shopping for clothes as boring, but will not wear anything from catalogues. I know anything I buy for him will be instantly rejected as embarrassing. Is currently wearing 2 sweatshirts and 2 tshirts all the time!

Any tips?!!!!!

i find it hard to buy for my ds(13) too there is a gap in the market! we go to sports soccer quite alot and they have tons of plain tshirts/polo shirt type things. i get fed up of looking at him in football shirts!

fizzbuzz · 27/12/2006 16:36

It is obviously just a boy thing, but the question is: do they ever grow out of it?

One off the wall idea.
If DS is into Death and you don't want to pay adult prices, then buy Noddy or Bob the Builder T shirts, and also some of those pens that permanently mark clothing.

Then help DS create various grisly fates for Bob & the Teletubbies. There was certainly a time in my own youth when not only would my peers have been impressed by such things but they'd have offered money for such "cool" gear.

hmmm now theres an idea.

is your ds into bands at all?? my almost 13 year old, will only wear band t-shirts, but woolies do a good range of those now.
also tk maxx are great and debenhams as they have the franchises all under one roof.

fizzbuzz · 27/12/2006 17:37

Ha ha is my Ds into bands? Listen to this!
He did say that he thought he might want a hoodie with Metallica or Nirvana on. Just one problem...he had to ask ME what the bands were like. lol!]grin]

Can't imagine how my mum would have reacted if I had asked her the same question. Did offer to lend ds some music to listen to, but he hasn't bothered...so back to square 1

lol..oh well worth a try

SpaceCadet · 27/12/2006 17:42

my ds is now wearing the band t shirts that i had at 18!

Lilymaid · 27/12/2006 17:50

BHS and Debenhams cover that age - between children's clothes and small adult sizes. Also the largest sizes in Gap Kids and the small size in Top Man. Skater stuff is OK if your DS is into that culture. My DS (now 15) seemed to live in tracksuit bottoms and tee shirts for years but is now buying from Next and Top Man.

FrostyTheSnowMarsLady · 27/12/2006 17:54

My DS can't stand the skater stuff nor the death stuff etc, but he doesn't want to live in tracksuits. He just wants plain boring jeans and t-shirts. Can't even find him any jumpers because they have too much detail on. Sigh...............

Honestly... if I had it in me I would develop up my own line of clothes for teen boys! Sigh..............

fizzbuzz · 27/12/2006 17:56

He will wear skater stuff, it's just leading the horse to water IYKWIM! I guess he's just finding himself at the moment!

Have to say, when I was a gal, I would have bitten my mum's hand off if she had offered to take me out and buy me some clothes(and not from M&S-her favourite shop!)What is it with the kids of today?

Marslady. See my post lower down...used to be a boyswear designer for this age group and failed miserably, they are notoriously difficult to design for.....just pains in the ass really

DS has been sent into town today to buy jeans and tops with Christmas money. He came back with Warhammer stuff and Tolstoys War and Peace!!!

Perhaps Warhammer should bring out a range of clothing?

FrostyTheSnowMarsLady · 27/12/2006 19:07

I saw your post fizz.... can't express how disappointed in you I am Sigh.....................

They are a definite PITA! But you gotta love 'em! lol

fizzbuzz · 28/12/2006 10:21

i can understand (buy bitterly hate)Warhammer, but why War and Peace? Bit of light bedtime reading for him there...

Maybe it's so you can't drag him out shopping.

"But mummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.............." he cries pathetically..... "You said I could finish my book first!"

lol

themoon66 · 28/12/2006 19:07

He reads those sort of books all the time... historical stuff... huge novels about chinese historical dynasties and japanese 12 century political stuff for example.

I'm not complaining... its better than worrying about him being out getting off his face and nicking cars!

DominiConnor · 29/12/2006 12:02

Yes, Warhammer clothes would sell well I think.

Also worth remembering that there are kits that will print to T shirts from your computer's printer.
A quick search on the web will find all sorts of pictures...

fizzbuzz · 29/12/2006 12:33

God Warhammer clothes...what a thought..need to go and lie down after that....loathe Warhammer.

Tied ds to sofa last night, and made him go through Route online sale with me. Finally had some success. Better than going to shop, as I was not allowed to go in, and had to wait outside in case I embarrased him in shop.

Yes have given those websites a thought, but do they only print on white?

OP posts:
fizzbuzz · 29/12/2006 12:34

Sorry Route One, seem to have deleted the word one by accident.....

OP posts:
DominiConnor · 29/12/2006 15:31

They work best on white, but it's a function of the colours you choose of course.

themoon66 · 29/12/2006 20:14

DC... when did you last see a teenage boy in anything white? Black is the old and new black dontcha know!

fizzbuzz · 29/12/2006 20:36

Yes have to agree unfortunately. Ds has just scowled at his white Quicksilver sweatshirt, and informed me only "ubernerds" and "chavs" wear white tops. His words not mine.....

OP posts:
DominiConnor · 29/12/2006 20:48

My ignorance about the naffness of white shames me.
OK, print it onto a piece of white cloth, then very badly sew it on to a black T shirt.
Best to do it badly because if it is not perfect it looks shabby, but if it's been sewn badly on purpose it looks well hard.

themoon66 · 30/12/2006 19:21

Well... amazing thing happened today... managed to get DS into Hennes!!! He was tagging along reluctantly with me and DD. DD was after a new top for new years eve party. I said 'there's lads' stuff upstairs, go have a look'. Amazingly he did Came back with lovely red and blue striped t-shirt, gloves, hat and scarf. This could be a turning point. He beamed with happiness when his 20 year old sister, who is a very cool fashion student, said he looked well 'bad'.
