Sexual emails

I had a look through my 16 yr old son's emails today, I was horrified at what I found.
He has been emailing loads of girls where they have told each other what they would like to do to each other sexualy and some girls have sent him half and fully naked photos of themselves and he has sent photos back of his Penis.
I really need help as I don't have a clue what to do.

Do teenagers use emails these days ?

BrianCoxReborn · 09/10/2015 19:30

At 16 there's not much you can do other than making sure he fully understandable the consequences of sending photos out into the ether.

He is old enough to have sex, so I don't think you have any right to tell him how to explore his sexuality. One positive to this is, you can't catch STI's or get pregnant from emails.

At that age, transmission and possession of those photos is illegal.

BrianCoxReborn · 09/10/2015 22:21

Really? in that case, clearly ignore everything I've said!

What age is legal for such things? 18?

noblegiraffe · 09/10/2015 22:27

Yes, illegal till 18. Counts as child abuse images even if the child takes and sends them themselves.

OP, there's some advice here www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keeping-children-safe/sexting/

and here: www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/Nude-Selfies-What-parents-and-carers-need-to-know/

Of course! I'm a tad dense Blush

Thanks for your comments, I have googled the law on sexting and will have a look at the links, I think a casual conversation with my son saying I watched a tv programme about sexting and sending nude pics and the law should be enough, he wants to join the police and knows that any charge he has against him will muck that up.
Thanks again for your help Smile

The law is outdated!!
However, it is the law!

Talk to your DS about the E-Mails, let him know that it is indeed illegal and if nothing else pictures of this kind being transmitted over your router could be considered your handling of child pornography and taken to it's logical conclusion you being placed on a sex offenders register.

That's the scare tactic

However...the law is outdated...teenagers don't meet at the local shops now days, they don't meet on the street corner and hang out.
Almost all of their socialising can be done online.
A quick kiss, cuddle and fumble in the alley has now become something else and as a society we have to take this into account, this is after all the 21st century
