What tips from mum to teen leaving for uni

I'd like to make up a scrapbook to give to my daughter when she leaves for uni. I wanted to include some photos, sentimental thoughts and maybe some mum tips on stuff like laundry, cooking etc. I'm running out of steam on topics to cover. Anyone got anything they can throw in the mix? My brain is a bit fried and am feeling a tad emosh! Thanks all

If you're out in the evening and a friend wants to go back but you don't, either walk her back then return to the party, or keep texting her until she says she's home safe

Establish a kitchen and bins rota early on to save on the arguments

A Bolognese is the easiest meal ever, and cheap, and lasts for ages. Throw in a tin of kidney beans and you have chilli too.

Always keep a spare tenner in your purse for emergencies

Always leave your room on hearing a fire alarm. 99 times out of a hundred it'll be a false alarm, and yeah it's annoying, but there'll be that one time when it's for real.

When you go outside for said fire alarm make sure a) you're wearing shoes not flimsy slippers and b) you have your phone, and a hoody/jacket.

Make the most of it in 1st year - generally doesn't count towards degree and in subsequent years probably won't be going to the pub thrice weekly!

When washing, any colour canjust be shoved in with others except a) they're red and white, b) the items never been washed before and is likely to run - otherwise hello, bright green formerly white top

If you have access to stairs try matress surfing. Be sure to use 3 - one down the stairs, two at the bottom for when people can't stop rolling. If likely to roll into door, prop door open.

Make friends with the maintenence people. There'll be one day when you're lugging3 weeks worth of wet laundry from washing, dragging it along as it's too heavy and it's possibly it down, and a passing maintenance person will put it on their wheely trolley and wheel it back to your halls. They are God!

Final note - regularly unclog plug in shower. Especially if communal. Up to 10 girls, all with long hair - it gets dire. Also if waters not draining properly DON'T just ignore it. It WILL seep under the shower door, and almost flood the landing, and mean people eitherdo a leap of faith over wet, or get squelchy shoes. Much as everyone says they don't mind, they probably do.

In the interests of being a good housemate, if a shared shower, don't spend hours in there. No one's timing you, but it's not fun having to have a cold shower because someones used the hot water.

Btw what a lovely thought op. I'm sure she'll love every minute

Some good tips but regarding the first one doesn't that leave you in a vulnerable position on the return leg? A lovely thing to do for a friend but it breaks the first rule of keeping yourself safe first!

Sorry, should have been clearer ?? 2 friends walk the other home (not necessarily the whole way, but far enough that you can see her walk in the building),if only 2 of you in club/union or the bouncers won't let anyone back in after they leave, do the texts ??

Really can't stress the fire one enough though. Last year there was a fire in my halls (same hall of recidence, different block). No one was injured but the number of people who simply stayed in bed was astonishing. One boy I know had to be turfed out by the firefighters. Even now, after that experience, some people stay inside when the alarm goes off. Very silly.
