Greasy Hair,

Hi,

My daughter has really greasy hair. She will wash it in the morning and by 11 it looks like it needs another wash. She's 14 and we have tried everything from cheap supermarket brands to really expensive stuff and home remedies like vinegar. She doesn't put conditioner on the roots and we've tried not washing it everyday but it looks awful... Amy ideas?

Is she rinsing it all really thoroughly? If there is residue it can look very greasy/straggly.

BrendaandEddie · 28/08/2015 05:03

She's not washing it properly I bet

WankerDeAsalWipe · 28/08/2015 11:47

I think grease does come with the territory a bit. I've found Sainsburys Apple shampoo to be pretty good with my two but I guess everyone is different. When it starts to look greasy, is it all over or just at the roots? Is it fringe getting greasy from her skin?, is she running her hands through it? Is her hair particularly fine? maybe there is more to it than just the washing if you see what I mean. If it is just the roots, maybe a bit of dry shampoo applied after washing and drying would stop it from looking dirty so quickly.

I'd also check that it is being washed and rinsed properly.

Every once in a while, use a bit of Fairy Liquid on it instead of shampoo. Say once every couple if weeks. Sorts greasy hair out - my theory is that you get a massive build up of shampoo/conditioner and that encourages greasy hair and washing up liquid cuts through grease. I dunno, all I know is that it works!

icouldjusteatacroissant · 28/08/2015 22:42

If the hair becomes greasy again in such a short space of time, this could be due to a hormonal imbalance, or something else that requires medical treatment. You need to visit her GP.

In the meantime, over washing aggravates greasy hair, and do not use conditioner.

Murloc · 28/08/2015 22:48

Mine was like this. Does she have a fringe?

In my 30's now, and still very greasy, but I find that alternating regular shampoo without any silicone in, with a wash with Pantene Clarifying shampoo keeps it somewhat under control.

timeforabrewnow · 31/08/2015 05:38

Don't use conditioner

Iggly · 31/08/2015 06:02

Is she washing properly?

Wash a few times a week and stick to one product for a couple of weeks before switching. Make sure she is really rinsing her conditioner out - a good few minutes to get it all out.

We had this problem andwe eventually realised that it was due to her washing her hair over the sink and as she has thick long hair ir wasnt beingwashed and rinsed properly. She now washes her hair in the shower, much easier, until it squeaks and problem solved. It sounds simple but we wasted ages on different shampoos etc until the penny dropped. She still has greasy hair but goes 2-3 days between washes.

Jobean123 · 06/09/2015 22:54

She has really fine hair, and it's only the roots that get greasy. Also I'm making sure she washes it out properly, not that it was ever a problem because I sometimes had to force her out of the shower because she is in there for so long... Thanks for the suggestion but I'm still stumped. Do you think the doctor would be able to prescribe anything because it's really getting her down?

Thanks

I guess it could be hormonal so if she is really suffering then maybe some hormonal balancing might be possible but I guess that would probably involve the contraceptive pill.

We use TGel for oily hair which seems to keep the situation under some sort of control

Celerysoup3 · 06/09/2015 23:29

T gel and spray on dry shampoo

BuckyLastard · 06/09/2015 23:30

Citrus based shampoo is best for greasy hair.

seventhgonickname · 07/09/2015 11:25

All I can suggest is going to a hairdresser for a wash and trim, she will get a head massage and thorough wash and axvice. With my daughters hair it was just the roots, she getting better at shampooing down to the roots now,I wish you luck.

Twinkie1 · 07/09/2015 11:42

Toni and Guy men's clarifying shampoo is what we used with Dd when she went through a greasy phase.

bigTillyMint · 07/09/2015 13:52

DD's very long and fine hair seems to get greasy pretty quickly on the bit by the scalp. However, it doesn't show at all when she has it in plaits - she had it in 4 "cane-row" type plaits recently for 4 days and it looked great. Could your DD try that?

googoodolly · 07/09/2015 15:21

Dry shampoo.

My hair got greasy like that when I was a teenager, I found switching brands every 2-3 weeks helped. My hair seemed to get "immune" to one brand after a while and got greasier much quicker than when I switched brands regularly.

Now I just buy whatever's on offer and my hair is fine.

FreeButtonBee · 07/09/2015 15:38

Swell shampoo is excellent for fine greasy hair. £££ but definitely worth it for controlling the grease. I also only put conditioner on the last third of my hair, comb it through quickly and rinse Asaph and thoroughly. Can get it on Amazon

There is another degreaser pre shampoo treatment that I rate - was the only thing that sorted my post twin pregnancy hormonal mess of a head of hair. Can't remember the name but will look it up and post.

FreeButtonBee · 07/09/2015 15:43

www.hairfix.co.uk/products/new-release-250ml

This stuff. There is a shampo and conditioner too but the swell stuff is better. This is a non-foaming pre wash which you massage jnto your hair, rinse then shampoo as normal. This really works and you only need to use it once a week or so.
