Pocket money

Hi, can I ask if you give your teenagers pocket money or an allowance and if so how much per week? Also do they have to do chores to earn it? Thank you!

age 14 and 13 - £30 a month each, no chores as such but they are expected to keep their rooms clean and tidy and contribute when asked. If they choose not to come with us somewhere then they usually are given a chore to do while we are out (i.e fill the dishwasher, or sort the recycling)

Nearly 16, £25 per month. Not linked to chores. Pays for PAYG phone and discretionary spend. We pay for clothes, school dinners, extra curricular activities. If she socialised more (hardly does) she would probably get a bit more.

Nearly 16. We give £5 per week.
But in addition we give cash for any socialising, buy clothes, phones etc.

So the pocket money just stays in a jar until I nick it to pay the window cleaner etc.

My plan for sixth form is to give them a proper allowance for them to budget with.

We give pocket money per month - €10 for DD (10) and €50 for DSS2 (17). Not chore dependent and it is play money - we buy all necessities. DSS2 spends nothing and has a cigar box full of cash that DP empties periodically and sticks in DSS2's bank account.

We do expect DDS2 to babysit for DD for free and with good grace.

We pay £15 a week for music lessons and £2 a week for sports club, so DD really does get pocket money - £6, and often saves it. She'd rather do her hobbies than spend money! I still pay for all her clothes though. Her friends don't tend to go out much, but if they do I might give her an extra £5 for bus fares, snacks or whatever.

On top of the ?30 a month, we pay for phones, Scout fees, swimming fees, clothes etc. The ?30 is really just for things they want to save and buy - DH still hands them a couple of quid to get crisps and a drink if they go to the park etc. It tends to save us money at Christmas and Birthday time as there is less that they want/need as they have saved and bought it themselves.

DS(15) gets £20 plus a phone contract. We buy all necessary clothes, but if he ants something we don't see as required (new football foots for fashion purposes when his old ones are fine) then he pays for that with a mix of saved pocket/Christmas/birthday money

DD gets £14 a month and her mobile phone paid for. TBH she seems to be rolling in cash anyway, as she has a paper round and an indulgent set of neighbours who pay her for dogwalking and errands.

DS gets £20 a month plus mobile contract plus bus pass.

We pay for all regular extracurriculars.

Thank you for all your replies. Looks like I need to start giving ds 13,regular amounts of money!
