I am aware my ever hungry, fast growing, skinny, sporty teenager is always hungry. I dont want to just resort to cheap carbs as it does not seem healthy.
Any ideas ?

Roast a chicken, get all the meat off it and have it in the fridge for chicken salad sandwiches and anything else you fancy. The cheapest way to buy chicken is a whole bird.

Some nice fruit loaf or tea bread made with half wholemeal flour is a good standby-it keeps well.

Cheese scones: freeze a large batch and they can be warmed through in the oven as needed.

Ditto things like chilli or bolognese sauce. My sister buys those little foil containers and freezes individual portions of these, and stuff like crumble, so there is always a quick meal to be had.

I live in fear of this period, since seeing how much my nephews could eat (famously, 2 large-size Domino's pizzas followed by an entire 8" home-made lemon tart and a punnet of bluberries swallowed without a trace, stomach still concave and he was hungry again 2 hours later). DS is 6, so skinny he's practically see-through and already has 4 weetabix sometimes.

Whole chickens and large boxes of eggs are more cost effective.

Soups with barley in them.

Wholemeal bread, peanut butter and bananas
Dd loves granary toast with olive oil, sliced tomatoes and avacado
Lidl does really cheap nice Mozzarella, I usually slice one up with more tomato and avocado with olive oil as a quick snack
Cheese and ham wraps
Fry garlic and pine nuts in olive oil, chuck in a bag of spinach, toss with penne and lots of parmesan
Popcorn
Lidl Turkish yogurt with maple syrup
Hummus and corn thins

And just in case this all sounds a bit healthy - she loves mattesons fridge raiders Grin

How old is he OP?

13 yr old DS has an kngoing "growth spurt", every month it's another half inch up!

I feed normal meals, then at 8 he has bread/cheese/nuts/chocolate/ sandwich/greek yoghurt/bananas whatever.

I do not buy specific snack food. Not enough calories for my money!

IDismyname · 22/04/2015 23:43

girlie what sized square dish are you suggesting? How deep is the mixture when you spread it out? It sounds great and I'm going to try it.

My suggestion is based around eggs. We must get through more than a dozen a week. And I only have one DS!

It's frittata. Travels well, sits in the fridge until ready to eat, can be turned into a 'proper' meal at a moments notice. It's good stuff.

Oh, and bacon sandwiches. If you have a Costco card, get their pre baked baguettes or ciabattas.

Sadly, whole packets of biscuits disappear in one sitting. I must make nice oatcakes instead.

I'm with you there, Maryz. A giant breakfast is the answer to sorting out morning hunger.

ishould the dish I use is 17cm x 25cm 5cm depth but any sort of small casserole dish should be fine. Make sure you grease it well and use baking paper as well to stop it sticking.

We went caravaning recently and was great for keeping the kids filled up!!
