Losing stuff! is it just my DD??

Trivial compared to lots of people's problems but...

DD's iPod 'mislaid' (fallen out of pocket) several months ago. Then phone dropped and broken (2nd time). So we replaced phone (contract nearly over, cheaper to replace than fix). Now, a week later, phone including debit card and provisional driving licence have been lifted from her pocket. She wears these hoodies with stupid pockets that things are always falling out of. Why doesn't she learn? Won't carry a bag.

OK, it can all be fixed, luckily I got phone insured this time (a week ago!!). Trying not to say 'I told you so' but I have, so, so many times.

Are they all like this or is it just mine? She's 18, should she be beyond this? She's brilliant in every other way but .... aaagh!

I have a 13 year old that even managed to lose his laces while at school - no idea what you do about it - other teenager never loses anything.

From your opening sentences, I assumed your daughter was about 13/14 years old. I'm quite shocked that she's 18 and yet throughout your post you make reference to how YOU have had to sort out the phone, arrange insurance etc.

My initial thought (which could well be unreasonable as my DCs are very much younger) is that she's not seeing any consequence besides a minor inconvenience each time these things are lost or damaged because you are sorting her out with a replacement. Even if you're kind enough to pay for the contract / insurance etc., at 18 she should be sorting this out herself. She'll soon learn what a PITA it is when she has to phone up and cancel the lost phone and arrange a new one. And thus maybe will take better care of her things. Maybe she's off to university soon? It's time for her to start showing some responsibility.

WestCountryWoman you may be right! She has a part-time job but doesn't earn much so I do help out. She made the calls but I sat her down and made her do it as soon as she got home. (Why do EE tell you to report immediately, then say 'We are closed'??). Yes, off to uni in September. She's been working really hard, finishing assignments, she's pretty level-headed. Just very prone to losing phones/having them stolen.

My DD 16 dropped her iPhone in the street the other Saturday. Useless pockets, won't carry a bag. fortunately when we called it, someone answered. An honest person had picked it up and handed it in at the hairdressers.
Phew.
She takes better care of it now. Live and learn.

TravelledtheWorld - "useless pockets won't carry a bag" sums up DD to a T! She searched the bus to no avail so thinks someone took it from her pocket who was getting off as she got on. Card cancelled, phone locked. She will have to pay the insurance excess and the charge for replacement driving licence. She's feeling absolutely wretched!

Sorry a meant to say I'm so glad your daughter's phone loss had a good outcome! Nice to know people are mostly honest.
