How to prove DS's age?

DS(15) was stopped by revenue protection at the train station today querying his age. It was all resolved by a call by the officer to me to confirm his DOB but as result he missed his train. What can he carry to prove his age that isn't his passport?

You can get a Child Photocard for free on most train lines. Other than that, a copy of his passport. I'm the same - I make ds carry his rail photocard, even when he isn't using his school rail ticket.

He could get a Citizen Card

if you are in Scotland we have this:

www.youngscot.org/card?gclid=CJPB5Zb9_cQCFQbItAod2wcA5g

Not sure if there is a non-scottish alternative - it is valid as age verification under Scots law.

Thanks, I had not heard of a child photo card, I will enquire at the station.

I thought citizen cards were for over 18's only, so another option I could try thanks

DD1 applied for a moped license as soon as she was 16, not so she could ride a moped, just as ID.

We had the same issue on the local Park & Ride. Under 16s travel free with an adult. DD is taller than me and looks older than 14. Fed up with squabbles with drivers, I take a photocopy of her birth certificate with us. It embarrasses the drivers that you have it, or that you can immediately trump their petty-minded 'I'm in charge here' attitude.

If you are in Essex and over 11 you can pick up a form from any library for a Bite Card. These are free photo i.d cards which double as library cards. You renew them at various age intervals.

My son has a photo of his passport on his phone and he shows that when questioned.

My 5'5", broken-voiced, fluffy-tached and pimple-spattered 14yo ds was refused service when he tried to buy a packet of OTC analgesics, because he couldn't prove that he was over 12. Blush

Is there a card that he can carry that will prove his age? Most cards seem to prove 16+ or 18+. I'm not keen on him carrying around a photocopy of his passport.

Creatureofthenight · 18/04/2015 22:47

Any UK citizen of any age can apply for a Citizen card, Oink.

OinkBalloon · 19/04/2015 13:51

Imust have another look at their website, then. It looked like it was for 17+.

If he's on the trains then their child photo card is perfect. Just bring his passport to prove his age the first time.
