DS is due to sit his gcse's soon. he has a provisional place lined up at college (certain grades needed).
i've received a letter about child benefit stopping in september unless he carries on in further education. obviously he will be studying but the letter asks for which college and dates of the future exams. he won't know for sure if he has that college place until results time which doesn't leave long for me to return the letter for it to be processed.

should i return the form with his possible college details?

I received the same letter this week. My DS has a provisional place depending on getting the grades they require. I filled the form in with the details of this college and just put June 2017 for the exam dates.
Hope that helps x

I'm also sending form back with the name of the probable college, and if it asks for exams then June 2017.
If she goes elsewhere I'll update them in Sept.

Same here. he is hoping to stay on at school for A Levels, but it's all grade dependent so in truth he could end up at college or another school so have just filled in the current plan and sent it off.

We had this with both our ds, they were signed off and then we had to send the details after.
We only missed one payment and they back dated this.
They sometimes ask you to send a letter of proof from the school/college, but these are only ad hoc checks they do on a cross section, you may not get asked to do this.
Just get in touch and tell them your dc intend to carry on to 6th form and you'll be told what they will do.

Does everyone who is still claiming receive this letter? DT sit exams soon, as well but don't turn 16 until August. Will we receive the letter closer to their birthday?

Sparklingbrook · 15/04/2015 11:40

I had the letter about 2 weeks ago and Ds1's birthday is in June ME. It came automatically.

They sent an envelope for the reply but had to get a stamp. Sad

I got the letter a couple of weeks ago for dd1, who turned 16 in December. CB carries on after they've turned 16, until the end of the last term of that school year.

I just filled in dd1's current plans - to stay at her school and do A levels, and June 2017 as the exam dates. If that changes, or they ask for proof, I'll get back in touch with them.

Good to know this info. We have plenty of time. DTs will hopefully be in the 6th form before our letter arrives.

busybeev · 16/04/2015 12:42

DS was 16 in January and i got the letter last week.
I was also irritated that there was no stamp on the envelope Sparkling

All dc are automatically paid until the last week before september iirc.
Then with us the payments didn't continue in September because they hadn't got all the info from us, because we hadn't had the info from ds 6th form.
It was only a matter of one payment that was missed though, and as previously stated they did back date.
They usually send a form for you to fill in, or you might be able to do it online or over the phone now.
Iirc it asks what subjects, start date and finish date, how many hours, and other questions I don't remember now.
With us we had to do it the following year as well as it was presumed that dc would leave after AS level, so they wanted to know they were continuing. Then another form asking the same questions and if you are chosen you have to provide evidence from the school.

thanks all. i'll send it back with the provisional college details (and hope that he pulls his finger out to make even a slight bit of an effort with his gcse's).

poppy

I'm sure he will be ok, but even if he goes on to do a Btec or vocational course rather than A levels you will still receive cb until he leaves full time education at level 3.
My ds1 received his until 20 as he enrolled on a course before 19 and it was a level 3, in addition to being august born so younger than many of his school year.

poppym12 · 17/04/2015 18:22

thanks you potatoprints

i'm not sure which 3rd a level he will be doing now as he refused to resit the gcse exam for part of one he had chosen (failed it 3 times and refused a 4th resit) so unless his coursework was totally fabulous, he will have to choose a different subject for a level.
