She is 100 miles away staying with a friend; she's got a bad headache, has been sick and can't stand up

She has taken a 400 Ibuprofen at 8pm & has no paracetamol in the house - I've suggested a dark room, water to sip and a damp cloth

Is there anything else I can/should do? I don't really want to drive down there right now - but I also don't want to seem unsympathetic; out of hours GP seems a bit drastic/uneccessary but I'm not sure

I wish she didn't think I can fix everything

Does she have a history of migraine?
If not, I'd be getting her to call 111 for advice.

KatyMac · 08/04/2015 22:04

No - never really has a headache unless she has a temperature

Hmm I'll suggest it

Can the friend not go out for paracetamol?

KatyMac · 08/04/2015 22:09

They are both 17 & non drivers & apparently there isn't anywhere open

Ice pack on head or back of neck can help a little or at least distract.

If there's any vics or menthol drops ther pe I find steaming for few minutes has a tiny bit of relief.

If friend has any travel bands can help with feeling sick

Hope it passes soon migraines are the pits.

KatyMac · 08/04/2015 22:16

Thanks - I'll pass those tips on

If this is the first one she's had then I'd go and be with her. I still want my mum now when I have one and I'm ancient older than your Dd.

I once went to the OOO medical service with a migraine that had gone on for 48 hours and was given morphine.

So it's not outside the bounds of possibility.

drspouse · 08/04/2015 22:20

(That was when we weren't living in the UK so the actual treatment might not be standard here but the "this is the worst headache of my life and I can't stand and it's been going on for 2 days" was clearly an emergency)

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 08/04/2015 22:20

ice pack in a clean tea towel, held to back of neck, or forehead. If no ice available, a flannel soaked in cold water & wrung out. Keep it on a saucer, keep re-folding it to make sure it doesn't get too warm against the skin.

Lay down. Soft pillow. If it makes the headache worse (pressure on head) lie in a semi-sitting position on the bed, supported by cushions. Minimal lighting & no noise if possible. Small sips of water to drink. Probably get a bucket or empty wastepaper bin in case she's sick.

Has she taken anything/any other symptoms today? Could this be something else? Can you go through the online NHS symptom checker thing for them, or can they?

MrsCakesPrecognitionisSwitched · 08/04/2015 22:28

There are other illnesses which can manifest with headaches, vomiting and balance problems. I think she needs to have someone with her to watch her.
Does she have a temperature today?

KatyMac · 08/04/2015 22:30

I've taken a tablet (earlier) so I shouldn't drive - I'll keep giving her the 111 advise & the cold wet cloth stuff

She's been dancing all day & is reasonably fit - but complained her hayfever had started & she sneezed a few times

I wish I didn't worry chances are she will sleep & I will worry all night

Thanks everyone

I agree she'll sleep- I didn't intend to make you feel guilty. Flowers

Tokelau · 08/04/2015 22:56

OP I just wanted to say that instead of an ice pack, she might prefer a warm damp flannel. Ice packs hurt my head when I have a migraine, everyone is different, so it's worth suggesting that too.

KatyMac · 09/04/2015 07:13

She has just tetxted to say she is fine, I think I might gether to see the GP when she gets back - to create a plan of action in case it happens again

Or is that over reacting?

And now she tells that most of the students on the course yesterday had a bad headache at some point - so it's probably a bug I guess

I'm so glad she is feeling better today Grin

KatyMac · 09/04/2015 09:58
