DD just 18, is going clubbing soon and I would like her to have some kind of device. I understand pepper spray is illegal. Would a handbag size hairspray be as good. I have ordered the check your drink test kit today which looks good. Any advice please? Thanks

Advice - don't kit her out with technology which give a false sense of security. Encourage her to use her common sense, drink bottled drinks, don't leave bottle unattended, don't get totally wasted, keep in a group of trusted friends, go home together.

Hi, I am a former Police Officer and current Professional Security Instructor.
You are quite right that pepper spray, mace etc. is illegal in the UK to possess. However, you should also be aware that anything like hairspray, perfume etc., used as a weapon, becomes an offensive weapon.
Someone else has said to teach your DD tips on safety and I would agree with that. Awareness is 90% of staying safe. Taking responsibility for yourself (ie look after No.1) is good advice.

Really interesting video by Manchester Police giving 60s personal safety tips www.wealarms.co.uk/personal-alarm a must watch which encapsulates the awareness issue when walking alone and personal alarms. Feedback I've had is that some can be set off accidently so worth shopping about. Key ring alarms are popular and I've brought this one key ring personal alarm

Quick update they do personal alarm sprays and UV tracers which are a great deterrent. They've added an article which I must say is a growing concern, as attacks on campus are up too personal alarms recent survey.

Personal safety alarm/spray advice please.
