I wonder if anyone can inspire me...DD2 soon to be 13 is quite 'girly' ie, likes Taylor Swift etc.. She is currently rather obsessed with You Tubers like 'Zoella' which I have watched and it is frankly 'mindless' banality. (Even her friend of 13 agreed..'it kinda is..' on a text)
.
I really want to get her something a bit more wholesome for her b'day while still indulging a little bit. She reads under duress, hates documentaries...used to be fairly interested in crafty things but texting and You tube/Sims4 seem to have taken over.

I don't want to be some hair shirt mother, so she is getting some of the stuff she has asked for but what, oh what could inspire her?
Her older brother and sister both like science/books/documentaries (blimey..don't they sound boring?). I suppose my point is that we followed a formula that worked with the other 2 and now I need to find a happy medium for DD3. Any suggestions?

I think you're fighting a losing battle tbh, and birthday gifts should be bought with the recipient's tastes in mind.

Enjoy her for who she is instead of trying to change her - my DM did this to me and I always felt like I'd disappointed her.

At this age I think maintaining a close relationship is the most important thing - could you buy theatre tickets, or vouchers that you could spend on a shopping trip together? DVD box sets that you could watch as a family?

Thanks for your message. *Neq. I really get your point. It's not that I am trying to change her, just to introduce new concepts or interests along with the interests she already has. I am taking her to see Taylor Swift in Hyde Park in June so am really aware of spending time doing things she likes, together. We watch Cracker and Breaking Bad as a family and she really likes that.
We are literally hours away from a decent theatre and (Pleb that I am, am not a real theatre lover...ironically because my own DM rather foisted upon me as a child/teen in London where there was no shortage of good theatres).

Do you think you could get her into cooking or baking? That may appeal to her crafty side but in a grown up way, and there are loads of YouTube channels devoted to cooking (cool ones, not just Delia and Mary Berry!). Was thinking maybe a chocolate-themed recipe book, funky apron, fun decorations, her own baking moulds or something?

That's a very good idea What, she likes baking...I could put together a sort of baking 'Box of Delights'...Thank you! And she could still use You Tube!

There are various chocolate making days available. Adult enough - chocolate making - child happy - chocolate.

If she's in to YouTube you could get her Tanya's, Zoe's and Alfie's books? They are better than no books. Also John green books seem to be popular with young teens who watch YouTube.

Also Carrie hope fletcher is bring out a book at the end of April about growing up and the struggles she faced as a teen. She also has a bit on her blog about it.
