Ideas for healthy snacks for 17 year old?!!

hi, my 17 year old daughter is emptying my cake tin and crisps stash at an alarming rate! She does want to lose a little weight (isn't particularly over weight but perhaps half a stone wouldn't do her any harm...she is worried about going on summer holiday with friends when she is 18 in August)

She does know cakes are fattening etc but I think is so hungry after college/work she doesn't care at the time! She does take or buy lunch as far as I know . Doesn't like fruit (except stuff like strawberries....in Feb?!!) and doesn't really like bread (I suggested toast!) Anyone got any ideas...not too hot at making things at the moment as have had a knee op so can't stand really!

Crumpets and cup a soup is a favourite at ours.
Toasted sandwiches (use toaster bags - also handy for left over pizza slices)
Left over new boiled potatoes
Beans on toast
wraps rather than bread with cold meat and salad
cold pasta with tuna and sweetcorn
Pitta bread and houmous

Popcorn
Crackers and thin sliced cheese or lightly spreaded soft cheese
Home made Muesli type bars
Porridge
Something less sugary like banana loaf instead of cake?

myotherusernameisbetter · 17/02/2015 18:19

Breadsticks and salsa type dips

My teen dd love ryvitas and rice cakes also bannana and cinnamon, the options high choc range are great treats also two ingredients bannana and oat cookies for a treat

welshpixie · 20/02/2015 20:35

Suggestions from my DD18
Wholemeal wrap, spread with peanut butter and wrap around a banana, then cut into slices like a sushi roll.
Berries dipped in yogurt then frozen
Veggie sticks and humous.

bigTillyMint · 20/02/2015 20:38

welshpixie, I love the banana/sushi roll idea - DD would like that too I reckon. And the other stuff!

73sushiroll, what is the banana and oat cookies recipe?

73sushiroll · 20/02/2015 21:51

1 banana and 1 cup oats mash banana and mix oats then make biscuits and bake they are yum and great healthy snack substitute for biscuits

FriendlyLadybird · 20/02/2015 22:38

If she doesn't get in from college too early, can you actually provide a meal for her when she gets home?

When I was about 15/16 I was heading towards being tubby because I had something to eat as soon as I got home from school (because I was hungry), and then ate a meal later. As soon as I asked my mother to move the evening meal forward I lost the weight within about 6 weeks.

bigTillyMint · 21/02/2015 07:08

Sushiroll, thanks! How long/hot to cook for?

PeaceOfWildThings · 21/02/2015 07:14

Bowl of cereal.
small snack bag of dried fruit, eaten slowly.
cuppasoup
hot drink with a fruity biscuit.
Crisp breads with low fat cream cheese, cucumber/tomato topping.
Start liking fruit!

HSMMaCM · 21/02/2015 16:36

DD loves soup and anything she can dip in humous. Cereal and stuff she can put in wraps are also popular.

Musicaltheatremum · 27/02/2015 21:19

Lots of protein based snacks. They will fill her up,and not out on weight.

specialsubject · 28/02/2015 20:05

17 and wants to lose a bit of weight, yet is guzzling cake and crisps? Is she aware of cause and effect?

tell her to make herself a decent sandwich when she gets home, and to move around more.

low-fat = high sugar.
eating more than burn off = getting fatter. Doesn't matter what it is made of.

nowitsenough · 06/03/2015 15:56

Dd13 likes mini cheeses, grapes, cherry tomatoes, satsumas, plums, cream crackers with butter and/or cheese, yogurts or chocolate mousse, scotch pancakes toasted with butter, Heinz tomato cuppa soup, mug shots, cheese toasties.

Tryharder · 06/03/2015 21:50

Can you not stop buying the cakes and crisps for a while. If they're not in the house, she can't eat them.

I was fat as a teenager because I am was greedy and would raid the chocolate biscuits etc. I moved abroad to work as an au pair with a family who didn't 'do' junk food at all and I lost weight without trying because I couldn't eat what wasn't there.

Timetoask · 06/03/2015 21:54

Apples! They are sweet, delicious, really good snack because they make you feel full

Mindgone · 12/03/2015 23:47

DS loves a small bowl of frozen peas to pick at, he eats them like sweeties!

Claybury · 13/03/2015 08:05

Agree with early evening meal. We eat around 6 ish, as everyone is hungry then. Hungry teens have snack later but at least they have a good appetite for the healthy dinner first.
Stop buying crisps. They are irresistible but totally unnecessary.
I find my DC's will eat chopped up fruit / carrots etc if put in front of them but would be unlikely to eat it otherwise. If you are around can you prepare it for her when she comes in ?
